 Artist Talk: Young Joon Kwak

Join us for an artist talk with artist Young Joon Kwak on November 14, 2017 in the Literature Building 155. Kwak is a LA-based multi-disciplinary artist whose sculptures reimagine the function, material, and form of objects, in order to create spaces and scenarios that propose different ways of viewing and interpreting bodies as mutable and open-ended. She is the founder of Mutant Salon, a roving beauty salon/platform for experimental performance collaborations with her community of queer, trans, femme, POC artists and performers, and the lead performer in the electronic-dance-noise band Xina Xurner. San Diego 15th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance

Point Foundation Scholarship
 
The Point Community College Program inspires LGBTQ community college students to fulfill their ambitions of attending a four-year college or university.
Students accepted into the program will receive up to a $3,700 tuition scholarship, admissions counseling, coaching and financial education at the Point Community College Transfer Symposium in Los Angeles, and access to the Point Foundation network of LGBTQ scholars, more than 300 alumni, and many others dedicated to seeing LGBTQ students succeed. The Coming Out group is a place to meet and gain support while discussing your sexual and/or gender Identities in a confidential setting.  This group is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight, or questioning folks who are coming out, considering coming out or may already be out.  Topics are determined by group participants and can include stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness, family/cultural issues, excitement and celebration with regard to coming out. The group is open to new members the first 4 meetings of each quarter and then closes to maintain safe space.

Apply to the Peer Guidance Program!

Through peer mentoring, the goal of this program is the foster a network of support for culturally diverse historically underrepresented first year students. Peer Guidance Leaders serve as peer support personnel and serve as an extension of the Black Resource Center staff. Through this relationship and sharing program goals, the overall aim is the positively impact the first year adjustment and ultimate retention of student participants. Billy Mills Lecture

Billy Mills, Oglala Lakota (Sioux) is a gold medalist in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He accomplished this feat in the 10,000 meter run (6.2 mi), becoming the only person from the Western hemisphere to win the Olympic gold in this event. 
He will be speaking about the pursuit of excellence and global unity through global diversity.

Oasis Drop in Services
 
The Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services offers math and science workshops to students led by a tutor who explains course concepts and encourages a collaborative learning environment. Current programs include MATH3C Study tables, located at Center Hall 375, Mon-Fri (10am-4pm). Drop in writing tutoring is also offered, where tutor and student will review writing prompts, brainstorm ideas and read papers for clarity and structure. Drop in writing tutoring is located in Center Hall 322, MWF (11am-1pm) and Tues/Thurs (1pm-4pm).
 
 
CAPS Daily Drop-ins
 
Want to gain skills to increase well-being today? CAPS Daily Drop-In Workshops are open to all currently registered students and are held Mondays through Fridays, 3:00-4:00pm. These workshops are a great opportunity for students to who are maybe having a tough day and want to gain skills to increase well-being that same day.  Students can participate by going to the location listed and do not have to make an appointment beforehand. In this informal, open forum, Dr. Roberto Luna from Counseling and Psychological Services will discuss topics that come with being the first in your family to attend college. Dr. Luna will also cover strategies and tips that students can apply to overcome challenges that face students who are "firsts." Themes will range from the imposter syndrome, marginalization and more. The first ten minutes of the forum will be presentation style to introduce the theme and will be live streamed on Facebook ( facebook.com/caspUCSD).

Rigorously interdisciplinary and forward-thinking, UCSD's Critical Gender Studies program has spent decades educating and challenging undergraduates through the study of gender, sexuality, and racial formation. The graduate specialization was added in 2016 to enable graduate students to enhance their research on gender as linked to race, sexuality and other social formations. Synopsis: Johnny Saxby works long hours in brutal isolation on his family's remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before.
