Sal Ochoa - MVMOC

At our last home football game of the regular season, we honored Garces Facilities Maintenance Man Mr. Sal Ochoa as the Most Valuable Man On Campus (MVMOC).

Sal is the glue that keeps everything working at Garces.  If something is broken, he fixes it; if something is missing, he finds it; if something needs to done, he does it.  And he always does everything with a smile.

He helps with all of our facilities and maintenance requests so that every event on our campus happens as smoothly as possible.

The students wanted to honor Sal and presented him with a MVMOC t-shirt.  It was a small way of them letting him know how much they appreciate him for all he does for the school they love.
Congratulations HOBY Representatives

Cory Chianello and Farah Abumeri
Congratulations to Cory Chianello and Farah Abumeri!  They were selected as the Garces Memorial delegates to HOBY.   Each spring, 10,000 high school sophomores from across the country join one of HOBY's 70 State Leadership Seminars to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community.

Congratulations Molly Soper & Lee Begin

Congratulations to Molly & Lee!  On Monday, they were honored by the Bakersfield Jockey Club at a special luncheon as Outstanding Student Athletes for Water Polo.

Mr. Justin Finch and Nick Sill
Mr. Justin Finch decided a Dart Tournament was next on the agenda of fun things to do in the Quad.  He brought out his dart board at break and lunch every day last week and whomever had the high score at the end of the week would be the winner.

Nick Sill scored 114 points and won a gift certificate to the Student Store.

Up next is the Annual Badminton Tournament.
Congrats to Peter Delis!

#12 Austin Giggy and #24 Peter Delis
Congratulations to Peter Delis and welcome to the Garces Record Book!  At Friday night's game against Stockdale, Peter tied the record for most Field Goals in a season with eight.  Peter is tied with Brandon Villalobos '17.

Veteran's Day at Garces

Today we celebrated Veteran's Day at Garces Memorial and it was really special.  A big thank you to Activities Director, Ms. Caitlin Witwer, for organizing an amazing event for our alumni veterans and our students.  The alumni veterans were recognized and each received a St. Sebastian medal. We had two special guest speakers: Msgr. Perry Kavookjian and Mr. Dick Taylor.  Msgr. Perry spoke about the battle scars our service men and woman bear and how they lay down their lives for others, similar to the life of Jesus.  Mr. Dick Taylor is the Director of the Kern County Veterans Service Department and he shared his journey and how he supports local veterans. At the end of the assembly, every veteran and every student was handed a flag which they walked over to the grotto.  The flags were then placed in the ground in the shape of a cross in front of the statue of our Blessed Mother.  It was a beautiful tribute to our veterans.

"And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." ~ Isaiah 6:8

Garces Stadium Flag Honors Garces Vets

The flag that flies over Tobias Field today has a special meaning for the Garces Family on this Veteran's Day.  It was donated by U.S. Army Captain Leah Shubin (Class of 1999).  She played volleyball at West Point Military Academy before graduating and going on to command an Army helicopter company in Afghanistan in the late 2000s.

She and her company carried the flag on their missions all over the country before donating it to Garces.  It was dedicated in 2009 on the eighth anniversary of 9/11at a pregame ceremony during which veterans from Garces and Tehachapi High were honored.

Before it was raised for the first time on the flag-pole donated by the Class of 1960, Leah's mother read a message written from the war-zone expressing Leah's love and pride for her country and her alma mater.

Leah and the hundreds of other Garces alumni who have served in the U.S. military over the decades have earned our eternal respect and gratitude.  They are truly among the best of the Garces Family.

Click on the link below for the list of Garces alumni who are veterans or currently serving our country.  If you see an error, or someone we have omitted, please let us know by emailing Vince Fanucchi at [email protected]

Congratulations Ms. Andie Clarke

Garces faculty member, Ms. Andie Clarke, competed in the Morro Bay Triathlon last weekend.  She placed 2nd in her age group and 10th overall.  She is amazing!

Congratulations Ms. Clarke!

Fall Play - The Three Musketeers
Wednesday and Thursday

Duels of honors, clashes of fate, romance, deception and comedy!
Garces Memorial High School presents
Ken Ludwig's adaption of the novel "The Three Musketeers"
by Alexandre Dumas

This play takes the classic romantic novel and turns it into an action-packed and entertaining performance filled to the brim with gallantry, treachery, and wit. See the Musketeers - Athos (Zelas Williams), Porthos (Alfred Agbayani), and Aramis (Connor Deming) - battle against the corruption of Cardinal Richelieu (Nick Oh) with an unlikely duo: d'Artagnan (James Castanares) and his man servant that wears a dress, Sabine (his sister played by Ashley Ruiz). Bear witness to many a heated altercation that pits our heroes against the serpentine and malicious Countess de Winter (Allyson Dunlavey), the most dangerous woman in France; and the fierce and brutal Rochefort (Victor Agbayani), the right hand man of the Cardinal. Watch as these intrepid crusaders for justice guard against the power hungry conspiracies of those that wish to sully the name reputation of the King of France (King John).

Will the Musketeers - the mysterious Athos, boisterous Porthos, and charismatic Aramis - prevail against the overwhelming odds?  Find out Wednesday and Thursday!  Join us for one of our performances in MLH at 4:00 PM or 7:00 PM either day.

- Zeles Williams, Anna Rinaldi, Alfred Agbayani, & Danielle Vargas
2017 Garces Canned Food Drive

Our Canned Food Drive is underway!

Every year, St. Vincent de Paul relies on the generosity of our families to fill their pantries with food for needy families in our community.

"But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." ~ John 3:17-18

Students will be asked to bring canned goods and non-perishable food through November 16th.

We are making progress on this year's annual fund drive appeal.  Please make your gift before year end.  This year we have extended a challenge to all of our alumni and families of alumni to reach for the stars and help us raise $10,000 per class.  This includes the class of 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021!   The National Association of Independent Schools median for parent participation in an annual giving campaign is 56%.  Garces families can do even better than that!  Donations made to the annual fund drive help us with our current programs and campus needs, including facilities, academics, athletics, the arts, and other extra-curricular activities we are able to offer our students.

Message from
Mr. Blaine Geissel
Director of Student Services

Hello Ram Families,

There is some premature Christmas music playing in the student store! It is my favorite time of year and we are having a blast on campus. That T-Shirt Co. has been very busy filling orders and we are proud of our "Barn" down on the football field. Thank you to all who supported Garces by buying new gear at the football games and we will be there tonight for the playoff game against Frontier. The students are running the company far better than I could have dreamed, signing new accounts and branching out into new areas of business. Coming soon will be cups, mugs, other misc. items as well as a group that is working on having our very own gift cards. I have the unbelievable pleasure of watching your students really create and make our company come to life. If there is something we don't have, please don't hesitate to ask, we love custom orders. If you would like us to help you with your company uniform or family reunion t-shirt we are here to serve. Over 50% of our business comes from sources off campus and we specialize in embroidery, screen print and heat transfer vinyl. That T-Shirt Co. has a product catalog with over 5000 different garments like hats, polos, jackets and especially t-shirts.  Please stop by our workroom or the store to check out what the students are doing, it is awesome.

Thank you for supporting Garces and blessing us with your students.

Sincerely,

Blaine Geissel

In Our Prayers...

Garces teacher, coach and game announcer, Mr. Mark Brown, lost his beloved dog, Deke, last week.  Below is a tribute Mr. Brown wrote about Deke.  Please keep the Brown family in your prayers.

"We lost a good friend on Wednesday, November 1st.  He was out 13-year-old yellow lab named Deke.  He was a happy boy, always had this funny smile on his face.  When we came home from work, he would trot up to us to greet us.  He would be wagging his tail so hard that it would swing his back hips back and forth so far that his tail would almost it him in the face.

His thing when he got excited would be to grab something in his mouth; paper, stick, plastic bottle, shoe, and a lot of times, he would just grab a big sycamore leaf and carry it around just so he could have something in his mouth.  It was a crack up.  Deke lived for the moment we would get home.  He would always look forward to me handing him an empty plastic bottle when I got home.  He would snatch it out of my hand and prance around, so happily.  Deke was such a good boy, never negative or envious or hateful.  Deke re-affirmed and reminded me of that is important in life: he was happy, loyal, positive, and a true friend, unconditionally.
You will never be forgotten boy.  Good-bye Deke.  We love you."
