Good Night Stories
for Rebel Girls

by Elena Favilli & Francesca Cavallo

BARB'S PICK

" This book is filled with 100 of the best bedtime stories you'll ever read.  It tells stories of inspiring women who have lived lives full of passion, curiosity, and generosity.  Gift this lovely volume to every girl or young woman you know."

Lonely Planet Secret Marvels of the World

JAN'S PICK

"This fascinating book is filled with tons of locales to explore which are definitely off the beaten path. Some listings are full pages with colour photos, others merely paragraphs.  From gorgeous out of the way places that take your breath away, to the kitschy to the macabre there is something here for everyone. Plan your next trip or just enjoy from the comfort of your easy chair."

Sir John Franklins Erebus and Terror Expedition Lost
and Found
by Gillian Hutchinson

TOM'S PICK

" This authoritative and comprehensive book, beautifully illustrated, would be invaluable for the Franklin novice or, as in my case, a real bonus to the previous books I have read on the expedition. This book attempts to discover what happened to Franklin, his ships and crew as he sought out the fabled Northwest Passage. A history buff's delight.
"

Remarkable Books The Worlds Most Beautiful and Historic Works

CAROL'S PICK

"This book is a work of art in itself, with beautiful illustrations and photographs of ancient scrolls and manuscripts as well as more modern books.  Reading this book and looking at the artwork almost made me feel like I somehow had the privilege of looking at the original, fragile documents."

The Moosewood
Restaurant Table
by The Moosewood Collective

LEIGH'S PICK

"I enjoyed the (then) revolutionary restaurant many years ago in Ithaca New York, and still own a well-used copy of one of their cookbooks. This one offers glorious new vegetarian recipes in a lovely, crisp format."

Views of the Salish Sea
by Howard MacDonald Stewart
Nature/History

It is not mere coincidence that two-thirds of the population of British Columbia occupies lands bordering its great inland sea, the Strait of Georgia, and connected waterways collectively known as the North Salish Sea.

As competition for space and resources increases, and as the effects of climate change are amplified, the pressure on this ecologically vulnerable area will only intensify. If this precious sea is to be passed to future generations with any semblance of its inherent richness and diversity intact, then it will need to be effectively managed and vigorously defended. The first step is to understand the complex story of the region, making this essential reading not only for history buffs but anyone with an interest in the future of British Columbia.

Sleeping Beauties
by Stephen King & Owen King
Fiction

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: what might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place, a better place, where harmony prevails and conflict is rare.

One woman, the mysterious "Eve Black," is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

All We Leave Behind
A Reporter's Journey into the Lives of Others
by Carol Off
Biography

In 2002, Carol Off and a CBC TV crew encountered an Afghan man with a story to tell. Asad Aryubwal became a key figure in their documentary on the terrible power of thuggish warlords who were working arm in arm with Americans and NATO troops. When Asad publicly exposed the deeds of one of the warlords, General Abdul Rashid Dostum, it set off a chain of events from which there was no turning back.

Carol Off's powerful account traces not only one family's journey and fraught attempts to immigrate to a safe place, it also illustrates what happens when a journalist becomes irrevocably caught up in the lives of the people in her story and finds herself unable to leave them behind.
Lost in September
by Kathleen Winter
Fiction

From one of Canada's most exciting writers comes a gripping, compassionate and stunning novel that overturns and rewrites history. Enter the world of Jimmy - -a tall, red-haired, homeless thirty-something ex-soldier, battered by PTSD -- as he camps out on the streets of modern-day Montreal, trying to remember and reclaim his youth. While his past is something of an enigma, even to himself, the young man bears a striking resemblance to General James Wolfe, "Conqueror of Canada" and "Hero of Quebec," who died on the Plains of Abraham in 1759.

As a young soldier in his twenties, the historical James Wolfe (1727-1759) was granted a short and much longed-for leave to travel to Paris to study poetry, music and dance. But in that very year, 1752, the British Empire abandoned the Julian calendar for the Gregorian, and every citizen of England lost eleven days: September 2 was followed by September 14. These lost eleven days happened to occur during the period that Wolfe had been granted for his leave. Despondent and bitter, he never got the chance to explore his artistic bent, and seven short years later, on the anniversary of this foreshortened leave, he died on the Plains of Abraham.

Now, James is getting his eleven days back . . .
Origin
by Dan Brown
Fiction

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend a major announcement - the unveiling of a discovery that "will change the face of science forever." The evening's host is Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old billionaire and futurist. Kirsch, who was one of Langdon's first students at Harvard two decades earlier, is about to reveal an astonishing breakthrough . . . one that will answer two of the fundamental questions of human existence.
As the event begins, Langdon and several hundred guests find themselves captivated by an utterly original presentation, which Langdon realizes will be far more controversial than he ever imagined. But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch's precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever.
The Ghost Orchard:
The Hidden History of the Apple in North America
by Helen Humphreys
Nature/Anthropology

Delving deep into the storied past of the apple in North America, Humphreys explores the intricate link between agriculture, settlement, and human relationships. With her signature insight and exquisite prose, she brings light to such varied topics as how the apple first came across the Atlantic Ocean with a relatively unknown Quaker woman long before the more famed "Johnny Appleseed"; how bountiful Indigenous orchards were targeted to be taken over or eradicated by white settlers and their armies; how the once - 17,000 varietals of apple cultivated were catalogued by watercolour artists from the United States' Department of Pomology;  how apples wove into the life and poetry of Robert Frost; and how Humphreys' own curiosity was piqued by the Winter Pear Pearmain, believed to be the world's best tasting apple, which she found growing beside an abandoned cottage not far from her home.
A Reckoning
by Linda Spalding
Literary Fiction

It opens in the spring of 1855, when John Dickinson is involved in a shameful secret that will require a tragic decision. The family's resources have been wasted by a reckless brother who holds all of them hostage and, adding fuel to John's desperation, the enslaved workers have been visited by a Canadian abolitionist who pushes them to escape. Bry does, and his pursuit of freedom will involve a dangerous quest to find his mother and child in Canada.

The Agony of Bun O'Keefe
by Heather Smith

Her mother is a compulsive hoarder, and Bun has had little contact with the outside world. Hitchhiking out of town, Bun ends up on the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland. Fortunately, the first person she meets is Busker Boy, a street musician who senses her naivety and takes her in. Together they live in a house with an eclectic cast of characters.

The Lie Tree
by Frances Hardinge

Faith Sunderly leads a double life. To most people, she is reliable, dull, trustworthy, but inside Faith is full of questions and curiosity. And when her father is discovered dead, she learns that he was murdered.

In pursuit of justice and revenge, Faith hunts through her father's possessions and discovers a strange tree. The tree bears fruit only when she whispers a lie to it, and when that fruit is eaten, it delivers a hidden truth. But while the tree might hold the key to her father's murder, it could also lure his murderer directly to Faith.
