Supporting the Human-Cat Bond
Cats and children have a bond for the ages.
Winn Feline Foundation recognized the importance of this human-cat bond by funding a significant study (W17-031) this past March. The grant award looks at shelter cat adoption in families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Companion animals, such as cats, are thought to benefit children with ASD. Yet, there are few definite studies on the human-cat bond, much less any studies evaluating the relationship of cats and families with autistic children. This project studies the effect of introducing a shelter cat on the social skills and anxiety in children with autism, and also assesses the degree of stress on the cats themselves.
Because this is a ground-breaking study on the value of human-cat relationships,the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) has also awarded a grant to the University of Missouri and its principal investigator, Dr. Gretchen Carlisle for this research. HABRI made the announcement in
a press release on October 2nd.
