Upward Bound's 'Trick-Or-Treat So Others Can Eat' begins this month
Upward Bound wants to help the hungry this October and needs your participation!

Throughout the entire month, Upward Bound is  hosting "Trick-Or-Treat So Others Can Eat," which gives campus members two opportunities to collect
canned goods and non-perishable items for the Salina  Emergency Aid Food Bank.

The first way to help is donating items from your cupboard or that you've purchased to the Upward Bound office in the Welcome Center by Oct. 31. You can also get involved by joining Upward Bound from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, where the group will go door to door in Salina asking for donations. Volunteers should meet 30 minutes prior to the start of the event in the campus's circle drive, and Halloween costumes are encouraged.

For more information on or questions about "Trick-Or-Treat So Others Can Eat," contact Monshonda Booker, director of Upward Bound, at 826-2988 or mtbooker@k-state.edu.

Student Life Center offering students three new sports tournaments
Get ready to get physical and have some fun!

The Student Life Center is offering students the opportunity to participate in three new sports tournaments this fall: ping pong, spikeball and racquetball. On Oct. 11, the SLC is hosting an "introductory night" for those interested in playing spikeball but aren't familiar with the rules or concept. The game night is from 6 to 9 p.m. and free snacks and drinks will be provided. Students can sign up at this time for both the spikeball and ping pong tournaments.

The racquetball tournament is scheduled to start the week of Oct. 23. Registration forms can be found at the front desk of the SLC and need to be returned by Oct. 21. Participation in all three tournaments is free.

For more information or questions, contact Avery Lambden, intramurals committee, at averylambden@k-state.edu.
Professor Nichols to give 'Drone Wars' presentation at K-State Polytechnic Oct. 6

Randall Nichols, Kansas State Polytechnic professor of practice, will be giving a special presentation on campus next month focusing on unmanned aircraft systems or drones.

Professor Nichols will present "Drone Wars: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Hostile Use of UAS" on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. in the College Center Conference Room. Faculty, staff and students, specifically undergrads in the UAS degree options, are encouraged to attend.

The presentation will cover UAS automation, collaboration, conventional vulnerabilities and countermeasures as well as commercial UAS sophistication, sense and avoid and SCADA systems. The overall goal of the message is to offer a wake-up call on drone threats and solutions to reduce risks.

This presentation is part of the K-State  Research, Scholarship, Creative Activity, and Discovery, or  RSCAD,  Lecture Series.

Two K-State Polytechnic seniors take part in Fly Kansas Air Tour
From Liberal in the southwest to Atchison in the northeast and eight cities in between, two seniors at Kansas State Polytechnic got the opportunity last week to take to the skies and tour the Sunflower State.

Jacob Spain, airport management, and Trever Linn, professional pilot, flew in the Fly Kansas Air Tour September 28-30, which is a 10-city aerial route of the state that celebrates aviation and promotes science, engineering, technology and math, or STEM, education.  Jacob and Trever also are interns this semester with the Kansas Department of Transportation's aviation division, who manages the event, so they were able to get a unique experience representing both K-State Polytechnic and KDOT.

During each stop, members of the community had the opportunity to view the planes and speak with each pilot, like Jacob and Trever, about aviation in general and its role in Kansas.
Dean Verna Fitzsimmons promotes Polytechnic Campus on 'The Bill Snyder Show'
The Polytechnic Campus gets the spotlight!

On a recent episode of "The Bill Snyder Show," Kansas State Polytechnic was the topic of conversation when Dean Verna Fitzsimmons made an appearance and chatted with host Wyatt Thompson. The two discussed our campus's mission of providing experience-based learning, the UAS and airport management students' win in a national competition, and how some of the degree options' curriculum has changed for the junior and senior years.
