Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley and Committeeman Doug Tomson were re-elected to the Hillsborough Township Committee in Tuesday's General Election
Tomson was originally elected in 2011 to the Township Committee and will be serving his third term while McCauley was originally elected to the Township Committee in 2008 and will be serving a fourth term.

Eagle Scout Luke Angello Honored with Proclamation

Luke Angello, a Junior at Hillsborough High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 89, was recognized at the November 8th Township Committee Meeting for earning his Eagle Scout badge. Luke has served the Boy Scouts in an exemplary manner and is deserving of the honor bestowed upon him.
In his quest to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Luke has also been inducted into the Order of the Arrow, was Senior Patrol Leader, Den Chief and Scribe and Patrol Leader.
Luke's Eagle Scout Project consisted of an extensive landscaping project to benefit the Samaritan Homeless Interim Project (SHIP). The project involved restoring a washed out, sloped path to a picnic area to provide safe and easy access. The project required removal of debris, construction of graduated steps and a retaining wall, excavation, seven tons of pea gravel and river rock fill, and finished with two rows of boxwood bushes.
In addition to the many hours Luke has devoted to scouting, he is also a member of the Hillsborough High School Marching Band as well as a member of the wind, brass and jazz ensembles.
Luke serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through his high level leadership and community service, and the Mayor and Township Committee are very proud that he is a member of our community.

Township Organizations Receive Grant Funds through the
Affinity Hillsborough Rewards Visa Credit Card Program
Nine different non-profit organizations received grant awards through the Hillsborough Rewards Visa Credit Card Program at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting. Representatives from the organizations were present to accept the ceremonial check presented by Mayor Carl Suraci, Committeeman Doug Tomson, and the members of the Credit Card Advisory Committee.
The total amount awarded this fall was $10,238. Since the inception of the program, nearly $75,000 in grants to community based youth, senior and local non-profit organizations have been awarded. Some of the Fall 2017 Grant recipients were featured in last week's eNews, the remaining groups are pictured below.

Air Force Veteran, Tim Coyle, to Speak at 2017 Veteran's Day Ceremony
Saturday, November 11th @ 8:30am at the Honor of Garden (Municipal Complex)
Committeeman Greg Burchette, Liaison to the Veterans Committee, announced the 2017 Guest Speaker for the Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony will be Tim Coyle.
Veteran Tim Coyle served from October 1966 - October 1970 during the Vietnam Conflict at Kadena Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan, as a Fuel Specialist. He began his military career as an Airman and worked his way up to Sergeant in rank after four years.
Veteran Coyle is a 26 year resident of Hillsborough where he lives with his wife Sue, and they have three grown children. Veteran Coyle is a Volunteer Firefighter and the Ex-chief of the Woods Road Fire Department.
Veteran Coyle will be the featured speaker during the ceremony that begins at 8:30am at the Garden of Honor.
"What more fitting way to honor our Veterans, but to have our Guest Speaker address the crowd during the Garden of Honor Ceremony," stated Committeeman Greg Burchette during the announcement at Wednesday's Township Committee Meeting.

Save The Date: Hillsborough Township to Participate in the NJ Devils' "My Town" Series
Special Tickets to be Available for the
NJ Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers (Jan. 13th)
"Hillsborough Township will again participate in the New Jersey Devils' 'My Town' Series on January 13th during a Devils game against the Philadelphia Flyers," announced Mayor Carl Suraci.
The "My Town" Series Program now in it's 4th year highlights New Jersey towns during National Hockey League games played at the Prudential Center in Newark. The New Jersey Devils tested the program during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season with 5 New Jersey towns as part of their pilot program. The success of the initial program, lead to an expanded program during the 2014-2015 season and will continue with enthusiasm this season.
This is a great event open to all ages! Tickets and Group Packages will be on sale for township residents who would like to attend. The Hillsborough Police Department will present the Honor Guard at the beginning of the game. Hillsborough Township will be recognized throughout the game, including a group welcome on the scoreboard. Following the game, Hillsborough residents will be invited to the ice for a post-game photo! In addition, January 13th is Chico Resch mini stick night honoring former Devil and current color commentator Glenn "Chico" Resch. The first 9,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini stick.

Special Fire Commission
Election to be held on November 13th
There will be a special election to approve the addition of capital expenditures in the 2018 budget. Voting will take place on Monday, November 13 from 2-9 pm and will be held at the fire Safety office. These items are classified as capital expenditures and cannot be put into the 2018 budget without voter approval. Please pass this information onto your memberships.
The three items to be voted on:
- Two (2) boats, one for station 38 and one for station 36. The boat for station 38 will replace the current boat which has reached its end of life. The second boat will add a second back up boat needed for conducting water rescues. Total expenditure not to exceed $50,000
- Two replacement vehicles for fire marshals. These vehicles replace two (2) ten (10) year old vehicles with over 100,000 miles are no longer reliable and their maintenance costs are rising. Total expenditure not to exceed $75,000
- Turnout gear to replace worn gear and provide gear for new members. Total expenditure not to exceed $75,000
- The voter approval for the replacement pumper tanker for station 37 and engine for station 38 will be on the ballot at the February 2018 election, if approved they will be purchased in 2019.
It is important to note that the overall budget amount for 2018 will not change if these items are approved.
This special election is being conducted in accordance with N.J.S.A. title 40A

Otto's Farm Park welcomes a new addition - this informational station showcases the current trails and mileage between various locations at the Park.
Otto's Farm Park is located at the corner of Montgomery Road
and Wertsville Road and offers trails for hiking and cross country skiing.

Mayor Carl Suraci signed a proclamation declaring November 16, 2017 as a Night of Conversation at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting. The proclamation was signed in an effort to address the rising alcohol and drug addiction problem occurring throughout the country.
The Night of Conversation is an alcohol and drug addiction prevention awareness initiative encouraging organizations throughout New Jersey to provide resources and awareness information on alcohol and drug addiction. The law also encourages parents to establish regular conversation habits with their children to prevent addiction.
Opioid abuse is a swiftly growing problem. According to a Trust for America's Health report, deaths from prescription painkiller use have more than quadrupled in the past 15 years, while deaths from heroin have tripled since 2010. In addition, nationally, more than two million Americans misuse prescription drugs, and nearly half a million are addicted to heroin. The Night of Conversation initiative hopes to stem the tide of drug use by arming parents with effective strategies to help them have meaningful conversations with their children on this challenging topic.

Girl Scouts Working to Recognize Hillsborough Veterans
Girl Scouts in Troop 61041, working toward their Silver Award, are creating a recognition wall in the Municipal Building to honor veterans and active military with any connection to Hillsborough Township.
Please send a military and current picture of yourself, and complete the attached veteran's information sheet.
All photos will be returned.
The form to submit this information is available online and can dropped of or mailed it to the Social Services Department at the Hillsborough Municipal Building.

What Township Residents Can Do with Fall Leaves
Keep Your Lawn Healthy & Green by Cutting and Leaving it!
With Autumn in full swing, the leaves have begun to fall and cover your lawn. Hillsborough Township encourages you to help the Sustainable Hillsborough initiative by Cutting and Leaving It. Instead of disposing of your lawn clippings and leaves, try leaving your grass clipping on your lawn. This practice helps keep your lawn healthy and green. In addition, instead of placing leaves at the bottom of your driveway, place them in a compost heap in your yard. Compost piles are easy and cheap to construct and help to reduce Hillsborough's waste. For more information about Cut and Leave It, read the brochure on the township website.
"If you currently recycle your lawn clippings and leaves by staging them for pick-up through the Hillsborough Public Works Department leaf pick-up program, you are already helping to avoid air pollution and wasted resources. However, you can do more by reducing waste at the source. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, compost your leaves, and let nature do the recycling for you," stated Deputy Mayor McCauley.
The Hillsborough Public Works Department will be running their annual leaf pick-up program starting in November.

Hillsborough UNICO Fundraiser Dinner / Comedy Show to Benefit Operation Shoebox NJ
Three top-flight New Jersey comedians will team up for laughs and a good cause
Saturday, Nov. 11th
at the Somerville Elks Club, 375 Union Ave. (Route 28), Bridgewater.
The Veterans Day dinner show is a fundraiser presented by the Hillsborough Chapter of UNICO, an Italian-American social organization. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Operation Shoebox New Jersey, a non-profit organization based in Hillsborough that packs and ships personal care packages to United States troops deployed around the world.
All three comics tour nationally, and are fixtures at Las Vegas and New Jersey casinos; they each have made several television and movie appearances and most recently have been headliners at Atlantic City's Borgota Casino.
Doors will open at
6 p.m. The show begins after dinner.
Hors-d'oeuvres will be served before dinner. Admission is $50 per person.
UNICO is one of the largest Italian-American organizations in the US. Its objectives include, promoting, supporting and assisting local charitable organizations and projects, while enhancing the image of Italian-Americans.

Adopt-A-Family Program to Provide Thanksgiving Meals
The eighth annual Adopt-A-Family program will help provide Thanksgiving meals for needy Somerset County families.
"We often hear that people want to help others within their own community," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh. "This is a perfect way for residents to earmark donations to help feed needy families in their own or neighboring towns." The program has collected $96,103 in donations since its inception in 2010.
The estimated cost of a Thanksgiving meal is $40. Anyone wishing to donate may send a check to any of the following local programs (please postmark donations by Nov. 18):

is seeking nominations for its 2018 Outstanding Women in Somerset County awards program.
"We have many women in Somerset County doing amazing things every day," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, commission liaison. "It is most appropriate that during Women's History Month, we take the time to publicly recognize them and say thank you."
