Out of a field of 40 competitors, Emma Kurtz, 16, of Hudson, Ohio, prevailed in the 2017 USHJA Zone 5 Horsemanship Class, held Sept. 21-22 during the Kentucky National Horse Show in Lexington. The prestigious class, open only to Zone 5 junior riders, required riders to excel across three phases of competition: a written horsemanship test, over fences phase and flat phase.
"It's awesome," Kurtz said about winning the class. "It's really nice, because it's a combination of a bunch of things that all have to come together."
It certainly did all come together for Kurtz and Betsee Parker's Carl, an 11-year-old bay warmblood gelding Kurtz began riding this winter. Kurtz was consistent through all three phases, taking fifth in the written test, first in the over fences and third in the flat phase.
"He's the sweetest," she said of Carl. "He's one of my favorites. He tries so hard; he's more of a perfectionist than I am, which is hard to do!

"I just want to thank his owner, she's been so kind to give me horses to ride, and she's really gotten me to a place like this today, and also my trainers are amazing."
Kurtz trains with Amanda Lyerly and Mike Rheinheimer of Madison Hills Farm, based out of Gates Mills, Ohio, and Wellington, Florida. She also rides with Scott Stewart and Ken Berkley on occasion.
"She works hard and she's very, very humble," Lyerly said about Kurtz. "For as much as she wins you'd never know."
Kurtz also won the Zone 5 Sportsmanship Award in memory of Patricia Haines. The Zone 5 Committee created the award this year to honor Haines, who was an incredible horse woman and dedicated to Zone 5. She served on the Zone 5 Committee for eight years and was an integral part of supporting the Zone 5 Horsemanship Class.
