A Message from Principal Gavron
Dear Families,
This week marks the beginning of the fall trip season at Wayland Middle School. This Tuesday and Thursday our 8th graders head out to explore geologic phenomena in the field, including dinosaur footprints and stalactites in a cave. The following week, our 6th graders will bike to Walden Pond to follow in Thoreau's footsteps. Finally, October 12th and 13th our 7th graders engage in our "Days of Wonder" that delve into Carson-themed activities and ropes course challenges. There will be memorable experiential learning for all.
On a less uplifting note, our K-12 Wellness Director, Scott Parshegian, alerted us to a new animated Netflix series that is being released this week called Big Mouth. From the creators of Family Guy, Big Mouth is a series
about middle school students and their struggles with puberty
that is riddled with
adult humor and content. Although it is in an animated format, it may send the wrong message to younger students who watch it, which is why I am writing to you about it. Here is the link to the
trailer
.
Please note that I would not recommend pre-viewing this trailer within earshot of children, due to profanity and adult content.
If you have trouble with the link, you can find it by searching You Tube for "Netflix Big Mouth.
"
Have a good week.
Respectfully,
Betsy Gavron

PTO's First Middle & More Coffee!
THIS Thursday, September 28th from 8:45 - 9:45 AM
|
The WMS PTO
will be hosting our first Middle & More Coffee in the Library. Our new superintendent, Dr. Unobskey, is looking to meet with parents to get input and feedback while formulating his goals for the district. While a RSVP is not normally required for the Coffee, for planning purposes, we request that you email
[email protected]
if you are able to attend this session.
Specifically, Dr. Unobskey is looking for input on:
- What are the aspects of Wayland schools / WMS that we want to protect at all costs?
- What are promising aspects we want to grow?
- What are the aspects that we can improve?
- How can we deepen the collaboration among the community, the schools and the Central Office?
- What do you particularly want and need from your Superintendent?
We hope to see you then!

GIFT YOUR CHILD
The PTO has kicked off our annual fundraiser,
Gift Your Child
. Pledge cards were sent home with our fall mailing, and if you missed our Top 10 List, visit the
WMS PTO Facebook
to check it out!
At WMS we do not ask you to pay dues or to sell cookie dough or gift wrap to raise funds to enrich our school programs – we instead ask that you make one, easy, tax-deductible donation to
Gift Your Child
in support of the PTO. 100% of your contribution directly benefits many PTO programs including Cultural Enrichment performances; grade level activities (Walden Pond bike trip, Cape Cod Night, D.C. Night, 8
th
Grade Community Service Day, 8
th
Grade Graduation Breakfast, etc.); extra-curricular activities (Cribbage Club, Rocket Club, Science Olympiad, Lego Robotics Club and more); Staff grants (over $11,000 awarded in grants in 2016-2017 including support for STEAM-based initiatives and inclusive classrooms); and so much more.
If you have already donated, THANK YOU! For every $100 donation made, you will be receiving a Wayland Middle School cinch sack from us as our thanks for your support. These bags can’t be purchased! Donations can be made online via PayPal at
www.myschoolanywhere.com
or
www.waylandpto.org
. Cinch Sacks will be sent home with your student through homeroom for online donations. (We have a backlog of these that we are working to catch up on!) If you would like to pay with a check, please return your pledge card along with a check made out to “Wayland PTO” in an envelope addressed to “PTO Gift Your Child” to your student’s homeroom or stop by the PTO’s table at 7
th
/8
th
Grade Back to School Night and pick up your cinch sack at the same time!
The suggested donation is $100/student, and if you have students at multiple schools, you will need to donate at each school – the funds are not pooled. Any donation within your means will have a direct impact on the PTO’s programming and funding. Please donate today!

Artists: Nina Price, Jordan McLeod, and Ariel Sousa
Grade: 8
Medium: polymer clay and acrylic
Our 8th graders begin their first unit by deciphering a contemporary artist's style, identifying three to four unique elements found in their work, and translating their findings into a "Google Doodle." This team viewed some works by British sculptor Anish Kapoor and created this week's featured artwork.
