A Message from Principal Gavron
Dear Families,
We are excited to have successfully launched the 2017-2018 school year. It was wonderful to see so many 6th grade parents at Back to School Night last Wednesday evening. Your partnership is important for a successful year. I wanted to offer a special shout out to the wonderful team of PTO parents who provided a delicious dinner for the teachers who were presenting. Thank you! We look forward to seeing our 7th and 8th grade parents at Back to School Night on Thursday, October 5th.
As we mentioned Wednesday, middle school is a wonderful time for students to explore new interests. We will be holding a club fair over the following week, and students can peruse club/activity displays during lunch. Displays will show students who is offering what, and they will note when clubs meet. Clubs do not require official sign-ups, and attending a single session does not mean students must commit to the group for the entire year. Students should feel free to sample many offerings and decide what is the best fit. Is Rocket Club, PM Wellness, Math Team, Literary magazine or Community Service Club a good match? There are so many choices! Click on the
Club/Activity Sheet
to see them (meeting times are subject to change - have your student listen for the daily announcement). If your child is struggling to take that first step to try out a club, please let us know and we will help get him or her there.
Respectfully,
Betsy Gavron

Please Obey Traffic Rules
For the Safety of All of our Students
We have noticed some potentially dangerous behaviors at dismissal and wanted to address them. Please remember, and remind your students that:
- Students may only be picked up at the sidewalk. There should be no crossing the pick-up circle to get to cars that are not yet at the sidewalk.
- For safety, no cell phone use when moving through the traffic circle. If you do not see your child once you are parked at the sidewalk, you may contact them then.
- Faculty members at bus duty are there to ensure the safety of all of our students. If they direct you, please adhere to their directions, such as STOP at the bottom of the traffic circle.

WaylandCares
Middle School Youth Leadership
Wednesdays, 1:15 - 2:00 at the Middle School
WaylandCares
,
a Middle School Youth Leadership program, is back!!! We offer students the opportunity to celebrate making healthy decisions to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and other drug use as minors. In addition to substance use prevention, the Youth Leadership group is focused on community service, community awareness and providing opportunities for your child to be a leader within the community.
Such activities include learning about various ways to help others in our community, and surrounding communities. For example, organizing a drive to collect sample sized personal care items for Voices Against Violence/SMOC, volunteering or running with a family member to support Pam’s Run or attending an MIAA Youth Leadership Conference to name a few. Students should feel free to come join a meeting to see what we are all about and get involved where their interests lie.
Wayland Middle School staff member Elsie Cerrone will advise the Youth Leadership Group with support from Jason Verhoosky, Director of WaylandCares. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays directly after school for an hour. Each week will be comprised of check-ins, educational resources, leadership and teamwork games and group work on community projects. In addition to weekly meetings, your child may be invited to participate in additional community events or education opportunities.
WaylandCares is a community coalition focused on reducing youth substance use and abuse in Wayland, Mass. In addition, we focus on the larger topic of helping the community of Wayland to be the healthiest community it can be. We work towards these goals by utilizing evidence-based curriculum, MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey Report Data, Educational Outreach to both youth and parents, and by forming partnerships and supporting other organizations community wide.

The PTO has kicked off our annual fundraiser,
Gift Your Child
. Pledge cards were sent home with our fall mailing, and if you missed our Top 10 List, visit the
WMS PTO Facebook
to check it out!
At WMS we do not ask you to pay dues or to sell cookie dough or gift wrap to raise funds to enrich our school programs – we instead ask that you make one, easy, tax-deductible donation to

Grade Graduation Breakfast, etc.); extra-curricular activities (Cribbage Club, Rocket Club, Science Olympiad, Lego Robotics Club and more); Staff grants (over $11,000 awarded in grants in 2016-2017 including support for STEAM-based initiatives and inclusive classrooms); and so much more.
If you have already donated, THANK YOU! For every $100 donation made, you will be receiving a Wayland Middle School cinch sack from us as our thanks for your support. These bags can’t be purchased! Donations can be made online via PayPal at
www.myschoolanywhere.com
or
www.waylandpto.org
. Cinch Sacks will be sent home with your student through homeroom for online donations. (We have a backlog of these that we are working to catch up on!) If you would like to pay with a check, please return your pledge card along with a check made out to “Wayland PTO” in an envelope addressed to “PTO Gift Your Child” to your student’s homeroom or stop by the PTO’s table at 7

The suggested donation is $100/student, and if you have students at multiple schools, you will need to donate at each school – the funds are not pooled. Any donation within your means will have a direct impact on the PTO’s programming and funding. Please donate today!

First Middle & More Coffee!
Thursday, September 28th from 8:45 - 9:45 AM
|
The WMS PTO hosts a Middle & More Coffee each month, bringing in school staff or external speakers to discuss relevant topics.
We will be hosting our first Middle & More Coffee in the Library. Our new superintendent, Dr. Unobskey, is looking to meet with parents to get input and feedback while formulating his goals for the district. While a RSVP is not normally required for the Coffee, for planning purposes, we request that you email
[email protected]
if you are able to attend this session.
Specifically, Dr. Unobskey is looking for input on:
- What are the aspects of Wayland schools / WMS that we want to protect at all costs?
- What are promising aspects we want to grow?
- What are the aspects that we can improve?
- How can we deepen the collaboration among the community, the schools and the Central Office?
- What do you particularly want and need from your Superintendent?
We hope to see you then!
