                 October
2017
From the Leadership Committee

Dear Friends,

September was a busy month for TTN-DC! Four fabulous panelists inspired a roomful of energetic women at the TTN program, Defining Your Own Success, on September 16.  Each detailed her personal transition over time, charting journeys that began with corporate leadership positions and transformed - for the present - to new careers that put personal satisfaction ahead of traditional notions of financial success.  Beyond the particulars of each person's journey, all agreed that it was not over yet!  Today's passions may be preludes to other careers.

Other September programs included visits to the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of African American History and Culture drew members and guests who were eager to sample the DC region's amazing resources.

In October, we'll take a deep dive into the issues raised by Grit to Great co-author Robin Koval in her inspiring conversation with TTN member Monica Schaeffer last June.  Our new salon series  -- three facilitated, small group conversations hosted by TTN members in their homes, kick off on October 4. Details are below.   Members and friends can also take advantage of our popular "Rewiring" program scheduled for October 24.

We're also thrilled to announce our November 8 Spotlight on DC program, a guided tour of the Phillips Collection's new exhibit on the story behind their most iconic treasure, Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party.  Our private tour will conclude with a specially arranged talk by the painting's conservator, Lilly Steele.

As always, we welcome your ideas for programs and other ways to bring our community of TTN members together to sample the riches of our region, and the resources, fun and friendship we can share with one another.

All best wishes,

Defining Your Own Success
Panelists recount their personal journeys

During a riveting discussion with moderator and TTN member Debbie Eshelman, panelists zeroed  in on their "aha" moments when they knew that their lives were going to shift.  Mary Jane Gallagher stepped away from a lucrative PR career and now custom paints furniture.  Tyra Garlington just received her radio engineer's license, and is a best-selling author.  Diana Gorrof left biotechnology and now uses her gifted hands to do massage therapy for hospice patients. Marcia B. Riley formed her own executive consulting business.  In sharing their stories, these generous women gave courage to and expressed solidarity with the audience of women in their 40s on up.  New bonds were forged and new friendships made.  The power of The Transition Network was evident:  to connect diverse women with like-minded concerns and encourage them to form a community around their visions for productive and satisfying futures.

Networking Power - Impromptu Style!

Early in September, Jean Brubaker a prolific programmer for Philadelphia's TTN Chapter, contacted Barbara Beizer (of the DC Chapter Membership Committee) with an amazing offer. The Philly Chapter was bringing a bus-full of women to DC and she had 10 extra tickets for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. We acted fast to publicize this opportunity! That's how several DC members and their guests got to visit this stunning and powerful museum - thanks to Jean's foresight and generosity. We love learning together, and now are thinking about a joint program with the Philly chapter next year. Got ideas? Let us know!

A Re-introduction to the National Gallery of Art,
East Building

DC TTN members enjoy a private tour at the National Gallery of Art.

TTN members explored the re-opened East Building on a private tour with Nan Morrison, docent extraordinaire and an artist in her own right.  We looked at 'breakthrough' works that defined modernism, from Modigliani, Picasso and Hopper to Rothko and Calder.   Nan also recounted the recent history of the East Building which was opened in 1977 by donor Paul Mellon, President Jimmy Carter, and architect I.M. Pei.  A recent refurbishment yielded additional gallery space, a rooftop garden, and newly acquired works, many from the Corcoran Gallery.

Introducing The Salon Series

Inspired by the enthusiasm generated by Robin Koval, co-author of Grit to Great, and speaker at our June event that featured small group discussions about how grit keeps us resilient, TTN-DC will launch its Salon Series in October.  Hosted by TTN members, Salons are small groups of women that come together for motivated, professionally facilitated discussions on topics relevant to our members.

The first series debuts with three Wednesday evenings in October featuring three topics highlighted by Robin in Grit to Great. October 4: Building a Meaningful Foundation; October 11: Digging in; October 18: Building Out.

For more info and to register go here: Salon Series: GRIT

(You can also click on the Salon Series events in the Chapter Events sidebar on the upper left-hand side in this email. Each evening requires a separate registration. Come to one or better yet, all three!)

The first exhibition to highlight this singular masterwork in more than 20 years, it is comprised of over 40 carefully chosen works-paintings, drawings, pastels, watercolors, and photographs from public and private collections around the world-that reveal the story of Luncheon of the Boating Party and the artists and patrons who were instrumental in its creator's success.
