FEATURED EVENT:
SMART Open House at W.L. Henry
The SMART program, Start Making A Reader Today, has operated in Hillsboro schools since 1992. On Thursday, Nov. 2, representatives from SMART and some of the program's business sponsors - Applied Materials, Genentech, The Standard, and First Tech Federal Credit Union - attended an open house event at W.L. Henry Elementary School where they read to students, gave them books to keep, and learned more about the program's positive impact on student learning.

Oregon Teacher of the Year Nominations Open
What better time than American Education Week to nominate an outstanding teacher for recognition through the Oregon Department of Education's (ODE) Teacher of the Year program? This year, ODE will work with the 19 education service districts to select regional teachers of the year who will be honored across the state in May 2018. One of those regional winners will be named the 2019 Oregon Teacher of the Year in September 2018. Nominations are due by January 31, 2018.

TAG You're It! Saturday Academy Enrollment Opportunity
Students identified as talented and gifted are welcome to enroll in Saturday Academy classes and camps. You may enroll in science, technology, engineering, math, college prep writing or college prep math classes. To view class options and to register, click here.

HSD's New Department of Public Safety

This school year, Hillsboro School District is pleased to announce the creation of a Department of Public Safety, led by our very own Chief of Police, Alex Oh. Last spring, District staff worked through the Smarter School Spending protocol to identify potential cost savings and discussed the idea of bringing our after-hours security service in-house. After finding that the move would save money, Executive Director of Safety and Operations Casey Waletich explored the value-add of having the internal security staff supervised by a sworn police officer, resulting in Oh's hiring.
