Sixth Annual
Society for Cinema and Media Studies
Undergraduate Conference
Hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University
April 6-7, 2018

The sixth annual SCMS Undergraduate Conference invites undergraduate students from Film Studies or related disciplines to propose papers representing their best work in cinema and media studies. A unique international event, the 2018 Laurier installment represents the first time the SCMS undergraduate conference will take place in Canada. There will be 30 presentations over two days, with everyone together for the duration, and no concurrent panels. Each participant will have 15 minutes to present their individual essay-approximately 2,000-2,100 words when presented at a normal talking speed with a few visual aids-on a thematically organized panel.

Any student who wishes to participate in the conference should submit a completed proposal form, which will include a 200-word abstract. Do not submit complete papers. The submission form can be downloaded here. . A panel composed of Wilfrid Laurier University Film Studies faculty will select 30 proposals for acceptance to the conference. All selected conference participants must agree to attend both full days of the event.

Panels will be scheduled for Friday (04/06) and Saturday (04/07), with a reception on the Thursday evening (04/05). Registration is free, and hotel accommodations close to campus will be available at a discounted student rate for conference participants. Students are encouraged to seek travel funding from their home institutions to defray the costs of travel and lodging. All meals excepting breakfast each day will be provided by the conference organizers, including a closing buffet dinner on the Saturday night. Students attending the conference will also attend a special private screening at Waterloo's famous Princess cinema (film TBA).

The deadline for proposals is midnight EST on Friday, February 02, 2018. Completed proposal forms with abstracts should be sent via email to ( [email protected]) with "SCMS-U 2018" in the subject line of the email. For more information, please contact Dr. Russell Kilbourn ( [email protected]), at Wilfrid Laurier University.

This conference is sponsored by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the Wilfrid Laurier University Student Life Levy Association, the WLU Faculty of Arts, and the Department of English and Film Studies.

Correction - Hannah Frank's Affiliation
In September's News Brief, Hannah Frank's affiliation was incorrectly listed as the University of North Carolina.  She was an assistant professor in the Department of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.  We apologize for this error.

Executive Director's Note
Dear SCMS Members,

Happy autumn!  I hope your academic terms are going well.

There are several key pre-conference deadlines looming this month, so I would like to provide you with a few reminders.  Once the work of the Program Committee reading pairs and the Conference Program Chair are completed in the next few weeks, we will begin sending out accept and decline notices.  We are aiming to begin this task in late October.

On the same day the accept and decline notices go out, the Home Office will also send out conference waiver confirmations and begin accepting Travel Grant applications via the website.

Once accept and decline notices go out, we will begin early conference registration, and provide hotel and flight discount codes on the website.

At noon CT on Monday, October 30, we will open up the online sign-up system for our new seminar format for graduate students only, with four participant slots available per seminar.  The graduate student-only period ends on Tuesday, October 31 at midnight CT.  Full membership sign-up begins on Wednesday, November 1 at noon CT and concludes on Friday, November 17 at 5pm CT.  Graduate Students may continue to register during this period, but will no longer have earmarked spaces.  Auditor slots will be open in the full membership sign up period.  Please see the linked information in this issue of News Brief for more details.

The Board of Directors will consider 2018 conference event proposals later this week at the October board meeting.   We received an impressive 14 proposals this year that represent the diversity of our membership.  The week after the board meeting, the Board Caucus and SIG Liaisons will be in touch with all who submitted proposals to notify you as to whether your proposal has been accepted or not.  In some cases, they will request more information to help the board make a final determination.

More specific timeline dates will be provided in the coming weeks as they are available. Thank you to each of you for continuing investment in SCMS and our annual conference!

As a reminder, new and renewing members for 2017-2018 will now have an expiration date of June 30, 2018. In order to accommodate this transitional 10-month membership (September 1, 2017-June 30, 2018), all memberships will be pro-rated for this coming year only.

More information about membership levels and rates can be found here: http://www.cmstudies.org/?page=MembershipRates

Entering our 59th year, the Society for Cinema & Media Studies has served to promote all areas of cinema and media studies within universities and two-and four-year colleges; to encourage and reward excellence in scholarship and writing; to facilitate and improve the teaching of cinema and media studies as disciplines; to advance multi-cultural awareness and interaction; to serve its members' professional needs and concerns; to strengthen the ties between the academic community and those who interact with it, from the media industries to the government to the public at large; and to promote the preservation of our film, television, and media heritage. The annual SCMS Conference Exhibit Area is an integral part of spreading the word to our members of the size and scope of the academic publishing industry as well as other publishers, institutions and companies which serve the cinema and media studies community available in the US and around the world.

The Exhibit Hall is a major attraction for attendees. In addition to our exhibit area, your organization also has an opportunity to sponsor items and special events and to purchase advertising in the conference program. The opportunities to put your organization in front of a membership of over 3,000 professionals from 38 nations are varied and many.
