Cozy Mystery Series with a Needlecraft/Knitting Theme

{Submitted and Adapted by Ellen Russon}

'Stitching at Whelden' is a popular informal get-together every 2nd or 4th Wednesday of the month between 2:00-4:00 p.m. Beginning and advanced needlecrafters get together to knit, crochet, sew, or work on any other type of needlecraft project in our cozy library.

This October we are also featuring some cozy mystery series with a needlecraft/knitting theme. Cozy mysteries, a subgenre of classical mystery and crime fiction, offer fun, entertaining, engaging reads without graphic violence. The protagonists are amateur sleuths, who are often intelligent and intuitive women who own small businesses and do their detective work in small towns and communities.  Come and see our display to get to know some cozy mystery authors that may be new to you:

Monica Ferris writes the Needlecraft Mystery series. When Betsy Devonshire inherits the Crewel World needlework/yarn shop, she has to learn about needlework as well as solve mysteries.
"Fans will enjoy the needlework lore, the included pattern, and the ongoing adventures."-Kirkus Reviews

Sally Goldenbaum's Seaside Knitters Mystery series feature Izzy Chambers, who owns the Seaside Knitting Studio in Massachusetts. "Goldenbaum's plotting is superb, her characters are richly drawn...and her prose is seamless."-Richmond Times-Dispatch

Sadie Hartwell writes the Tangled Web Mystery series about Josie Blair, a yarn shop owner in Dorset Falls, Connecticut. The books include knitting patterns. "A tale of murder and intrigue that will ensnare knitters and non-knitters alike. I couldn't put it down."-Barbara Ross

Betty Hechtman's Yarn Retreat Mystery series features a dessert chef who inherits a yarn retreat business.  "A cozy mystery that you won't want to put down...combines cooking, knitting, and murder in one great book!"- Fresh Fiction

Maggie Sefton writes the Knitting Mystery series. Kelly Flynn teaches knitting at the House of Lambspun and also sleuths. "Well-drawn characters and a wickedly clever plot-you'll love unraveling this mystery."-Laura Childs, New York Times bestselling author

Lea Wait writes the Mainely Needlepoint Mystery series set in Maine. "Offers a wonderful sense of place and characters right from the very beginning. Highly recommended." -Suspense Magazine

The Proving
By Beverly Lewis

Having left the Amish life for the English world, Amanda Dienner is shocked when she learns that her mother has passed and left her Lancaster County's most popular Amish bed-and-breakfast. The catch is she has to run it herself for one year, acting as hostess. Amanda accepts the terms, but coming home to people she left behind won't be easy.

Who Counts?
100 Sheep, 10 Coins, and 2 Sons

By Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Eisenberg Sasso

Oh, no! The man is missing his sheep! The woman is missing her coin! The father is missing his son! Can you help them find what they are looking for?

Who Counts? is a creative retelling of three of Jesus' most popular parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. As young readers count to help the characters find what's missing, Who Counts? teaches that every one of us counts in God's eyes and that everyone should feel counted.

The stories are beautifully illustrated with modern-day characters and a diversity of ethnicities so that all children will be able to see themselves in the stories. Ideal for children ages 4-8. Includes a note for parents and teachers.  -Goodreads
