Weekend Lineup
Christmas, Chris, Cajun, Country!
It's opening weekend at Santa's Wonderland in College Station. Veterans with military ID get in free! This place has been celebrating a Texas-size Christmas for 20 years. It's a great way to escape reality and get into the Christmas spirit. Live music features traditional, Texas, and Bavarian Christmas performances. Enzian Buam will present the Great Bavarian Christmas Show from 6-11 pm every Monday (Nov. 13, 20, 27, and Dec. 4, 11, 18) and on Dec. 24, 25, and 26. Mark you calendar to catch one of these shows featuring the world-class yodeling of Jason Keepers and first-rate fiddling of Robert Herridge.

Did you know there's a beer garden at the Texas Renaissance Festival? It's the perfect place for lords and ladies to enjoy the music of Chris Rybak and dance the chicken dance (not authentic to the renaissance era, but who cares?). Celebrate Oktoberfest every Saturday and Sunday through Thanksgiving weekend. Polka on ye all!

Join the Cajun French Music Association De Fa Tras chapter in San Antonio on Saturday night. Chansons et Soulards from Austin provide the classic Cajun tunes - music you can either drink to, cry to, or dance to. Or all three. Ayyy-Eiii!

Sweet Home Music City has Glen Collins and The Alibis on Sunday. You'll enjoy the classic country and Western Swing, along with fiddler Paul Schlesinger's fiddlin' around.

More Weekend Fun: Friday: The Fab 5 at Lodge 88 Houston, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...Roger Kirby & The Texas Heart Beat in Elm Mott. Saturday: Big Star Texas Night with Sean Orr and Gary P. Nunn in Burton...Neon Light Cowboys at Cistern Country Store...The Moravians at Flag Hall in Cyclone...Al Sulak & The Country Sounds in Rosenberg...Jeff Woolsey & The Dancehall Kings in Tomball. Sunday: Czechaholics in Elgin...Loose Change at north Houston VFW...Charles & The Fabulous 4 in New Taiton. And it's the final weekend of Wurstfest

Other news: Nov. 10 is the deadline to apply for the 2018 Texas Folklife Apprenticeship Program...The Big 3 dance usually held in Shelby on the third Sunday of January will not be held in 2018. Anna Rose Brandt, who books the bands for Harmonie Hall, cited competition with Squeezebox playing in Houston that day as the reason :-(

Polka On, Y'all!

Subscription Drive Underway!
Coming in November: Tomball celebrates its 10th German Christmas Market. From a flatbed truck with one polka band to two major German festivals every year, the Tomball Sister City Organization has found the formula for a successful festival. Gary McKee salutes the town band, namely the Schuhmann Band and its connection to the Christmas at Winedale event. Justin Everett reviews the Das Ist Lustig 10th anniversary CD, Road Trip, and takes a tour of the polka museum in Schulenburg. Lots of Christmas destinations like Santa's Wonderland, Christkindlmarkt in Hallettsville, and Slovacek's in West is your one-stop Christmas shop. Find out how you can receive a free A Czech & Then Some Christmas CD by giving a subscription to the paper or ordering from the Polka On! Store. Of course, we have your listings of dances, festivals, and live music events.

Take A Moment To
Thank A Veteran

When you see someone in a uniform,
Someone who serves us all,
Doing military duty,
Answering their country's call,

Take a moment to thank them
For protecting what you hold dear;
Tell them you are proud of them;
Make it very clear.

Just tap them on the shoulder,
Give a smile, and say,
"Thanks for what you're doing
To keep us safe in the USA!"

WEEKLY LAUGH
A little girl asked her father, "Daddy, do all fairy tales begin with 'Once upon a time'?"
He replied, "No, there's a whole series of fairy tales that begin with 'If elected, I promise...'"
