Keep going strong!
We're just over a month through the semester and midterms are just around the corner! Ten weeks of instruction remain for the fall semester. We hope everything is going well in your classes, but if you need any help, we're here for you. Your advisor is a great resource and can help you find tutors in our office and around campus, decide whether or not to drop that class you're worried about, change your major, start the financial aid process for next semester, help you find counseling services, and the list goes on. Please d
on't hesitate to go to them with any concerns you have! And if there's anything we can do for you as a department, be sure to make a suggestion.

 That familiar crisp air has arrived. We're waking up to frost on sidewalks, sweaters are making an appearance, and pumpkin spice lattes are back. Do you have all of the gear you need to keep you warm for winter? Do you have too much gear that you'd like to see get used? Winter Warm-Up might be the solution!
Winter Warm-Up is a free-cycle event that starts up at 10:00 am on October 7th at the Hess Rec Center. Stop by to pick up what you need and drop off what you don't! Drop off is October 7th from 8:30-10:00 am!

Festival of Native Arts Logo Contest
 Festival of Native Arts is on a mission to find their 2018 logo! Will you be the one to create it? The winner of the contest will receive one UAF undergraduate tuition credit (value = $244) and complimentary Festival items featuring the artwork. Be sure to submit your entry to the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development by 5:00 pm on October 11th.
The Festival of Native Arts is a student-run event that brings together people from all over Alaska to celebrate culture. This year, it will be held March 1-3, 2018 and the theme is "45 Years of Festival of Native Arts." If logo-creation isn't your thing but you still want to help out, you are more than welcome! The Festival Planning Committee meets every Wednesday from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Brooks Building Gathering Room.

Positive Connection Nights
Rural Student Services is hosting two Positive Connection Nights

The first PCN will be a Kahoot! Trivia night! J
ust in time for midterms, this event will be all about relaxing with friends, having fun, and eating good food (we'll be serving moose stroganoff)!
October 27th at 5:00 pm
This PCN is Halloween-themed! Get the extra mile out of your costume by wearing it to the event. We'll be cooking up some spooky snacks and playing Minute to Win It!

Student Highlights
Denae Benson
Denae Benson is a History major with a double minor in Spanish and Political Science. After obtaining her Bachelor's degree, she wants to attend graduate school to get a Master's in Education.
In 2015,
Denae was able to intern with Lisa Murkowski, and this past summer she was invited to participate in the Model Arctic Council (MAC). She spent a week at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire while playing the role of the Inuit Circumpolar Council representative, discussing issues that face the Arctic and the people who live there. She says that "
this opportunity was absolutely an amazing experience and I may have the opportunity to travel to Finland next year to participate in the MAC again." Lastly, she encourages other students to "look for opportunities!"

Elders and Youth Conference
will be held on October 16-18th and the AFN
convention
will be on October 19-21st in Anchorage. If you plan to attend either of these events instead of classes, make sure you're caught up and talk to your instructors about being absent from class. Midterms are generally set to take place around this time as well, so plan ahead!

Don't forget to complete your AlcoholEdu and Haven training by October 31st! Failure to complete this training by the deadline will result in a registration hold being placed on your account for the upcoming spring semester. You can access the training on

Study Away Fair
Are you interested in traveling or studying at a university outside of Alaska? Stop by the Study Away Fair in the Wood Center on October 10th from 9:00 am-4:00 pm! UAF offers hundreds of national and international exchanges or study abroad programs. The UAF International Programs & Initiatives office will be there to show you all of the different opportunities available to you.

Indigenous Peoples Day
Come and join the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day on October 9th from 3:00-9:00 pm! The celebration will begin with a blessing at Troth Yeddha' park at 3:00 pm before moving down to the Wood Center multilevel lounge at 4:00 pm. There will be dancing, refreshments, artisan sales, and more!

Alternative Spring Break
 Alternative Spring Break is a program that aims to give students a chance to make a positive difference in communities through hands-on work. This year, the SLI office will be taking a trip to Houston, TX to do Hurricane Harvey relief. Relief efforts will be provided in the form of restoring and rebuilding housing, renovating youth centers, and giving support to those displaced by the hurricane. If you would like to make a difference with your Spring Break, this is a great opportunity! Apply now on

Join a Club!
Getting involved in things that you're interested in is a big part of college life. Not only do you get a chance to make a difference or submerge yourself into your hobbies, but you get to do it with other, like-minded people who have similar goals in mind. Those friendships that you create may be just the thing you need to forge ahead. Also, a ton of clubs provide free food, so there's that.
