Professional Pharmacy Fraternity

As I write this, fall has finally arrived in the Midwest. We've had an exceptionally warm September, so the cooler temperatures are truly welcome.

Summer was a very busy time for me. In May, I experienced kidney stones, which required two visits to the operating room for removal. I wasn't at the top of my game for almost a month. It's not an experience that I would like to repeat. If there is any benefit to the entire episode, it is that I have become more sympathetic to my patients. I am much more empathetic regarding pain and frustration, which is perhaps not a bad lesson for a pharmacist.

We had a fabulous convention in Atlanta! Other than our centennial gathering, this was the largest attendance that we have had in many years, with right at 200 registrants! Collegiates and alumni alike were delighted to be there and participate in old traditions and also to be there for the reveal of our rebranding!

Speaking of our rebranding, you will start seeing the efforts of this year-long project just about everywhere you look. Even this newsletter has a new header! The website has a fresh new look and should be easier to navigate as well. Convention attendees were the first to see the new logos and designs that are becoming a part of our public persona. A swag bag containing goodies with our new logos was presented to each attendee. It was a truly exciting event!

By now you should have also received your dues reminder. Please take a moment to renew your membership in Lambda Kappa Sigma. Your dues really make a difference in supporting women in pharmacy. The following news article has some really BIG news about dues renewals - be sure to read on!

Wishing you a very happy fall season!

Fraternally,

Chris Grass
Grand Vice President for Alumni
Membership Renewal -
Really Big News!

November 1st was the deadline for renewal of your dues. You may recall that the deadline was changed from April 1st to November 1st in 2016, to align all dues payments to the fall. Change can be difficult for lots of us -- so here's a special deal, just for you!

If you have missed renewing your membership for a dues cycle, don't worry. There's no back dues payments and best of all, we will reward you with some swag featuring our new logos from the recent rebranding!

And for you loyal dues payers, we've got a very special reward for you, too! When you renew your membership, your name will be placed in a drawing for a COMPLIMENTARY registration for Convention 2018 in Buffalo! How is that for a reward for loyalty? WOW!

We are eager to hear from YOU! The deadline has been extended to December 1st. Don't wait...renew today!
Apply for a Grand Council
Position by November 15th!

We are looking for a few good women (and men!) to step up and serve our beloved Fraternity on a national level as a Grand Council officer.

YOU could be a part of history by helping shape and grow the future of LKS. Please consider applying. The deadline is November 15th!

Convention 2018 ---
Buffalo, New York

Lambs will gather in Buffalo, New York, July 25-28, 2018, for our Annual Convention! Alpha Theta and Beta Alpha Chapters will be our host--and they are looking forward to greeting us to their wonderful city!

Once again, the convention promises something for everyone -- networking, continuing education, fraternity business, great meals and FUN, too!

Ewe Can Shop will be returning for the seventh time (wow!), and we will be offering booth space for both chapters and lamb-owned businesses. Be watching for details about how to reserve your space.

Convention registration information will be available late spring, so be sure to watch your email and lks.org/Convention18 as well. For those of you who will need to request time off from work, now is the time to do it.

We will be gathering at the Adams Mark Buffalo Hotel and Conference Center. It's a beautiful hotel and promises to be a great venue for us.

With many of our chapters being located in the northeast, many of you will be able to drive to Buffalo. It's also very close to Niagara Falls and Toronto, so you just might want to make a vacation out of the entire experience.

Looking forward to seeing YOU in Buffalo!

Philanthropic Fundraising

Do you ever shop online? Do you love direct sales merchandise? For many of you, the answer to both of these questions is yes!

In 2016 and 2017, I held an online sale of Thirty-one bags and used my hostess gifts as donations to the Educational Trust. Both years, the Trust raised approximately $1,000 in donations that were used at the auction during Convention. Let me tell, you the board members were thrilled to receive these donations. In fact, Mary Meredith, who coordinated the auction this year, asked me to promote this idea to all of you!

I know that some of you have already used this method with Yankee Candles, KEEP Collective jewelry, Premier Jewelry and so much more. Sisters have told me how much they like these sales because they are convenient, offer unique merchandise and are usually quite affordable. Best of all, these types of sales benefit small business owners and also the Educational Trust!

Please consider an event like this, either on your own or through your alumni chapter. If you have questions, I can help!
Welcome New Graduates!

Congratulations to all of the 2017 graduates! These past few months have most undoubtedly been hectic for you... graduations, board exams, new employment and possibly even relocation!

Throughout all of these changes, one thing is constant...sisterhood in Lambda Kappa Sigma! We are all truly Lambs for Life!

If you are a new graduate, don't forget that your first year of membership upon graduation is absolutely free -- it's our graduation gift to you! (So you are dues paid through 10/31/2018.)

Log into the Member Portal to make sure we have your correct contact info so you can keep up on everything happening with LKS.

We want to stay in touch with you ... hear your success stories, keep up to date with your personal life (marriages, engagements, new jobs, pets, children). This is what keeps us close, even though the miles separate us. Update us on what's happening with you!

If your chapter has had success in recruiting new graduates, drop me a line. I'll feature your success story in an upcoming alumni newsletter!
LKS Mini-Reunions

Two of our sisters,  Mary Meredith (Tau) and Patty Kienle (Alpha Phi Alumni) recently attended events at their alma maters. They both realized that these gatherings turned into mini reunions of Lambs! They both told me how much they enjoyed seeing LKS sisters and that even their own universities took note of the sisterhood as well. The next time that you are attending an alumni event for your university, please tell me about other Lambs who were there as well. I'll be discussing more about the "lamb-ortunities" in a future newsletter!
What's New with Ewe?

Mary Murphy Moser (Alpha Zeta) and her husband, Zach, decided to attempt the impossible -- remodel their home and prepare for a new baby -- all at the same time. Steady progress on the remodeling was made and faithfully posted on Facebook. Pregnancy progress was highlighted, too. It was a close race to the finish line, but in the end, baby John David Moser decided to arrive two weeks early, and the house wasn't ready! But not to worry, everything was okay in the end, and the entire family is doing well. John David was born August 19, 2017, was 6 pounds and 8 ounces, and measured 20.75 inches.

Dixie and Neil Leikach (Epsilon Alumni and Patron) were honored by the Maryland Pharmacists Association with the Excellence in Innovation Award in June 2017. We're so proud of both of you!

Montanna Paulhus (Alpha Beta Alumni) became engaged to David Bedard in July 2017. The proposal happened at Nubble Lighthouse! A September 2018 wedding is planned!

Jera Wilburn Tuetkin (Alpha Zeta alumni) married Bart Tuetkin on May 13, 2017. Congratulations!

Stephanie Alvarez (Alpha Pi Alumni)  is expecting an addition to her family any day now! We are anxiously awaiting the news of your new arrival!

Tiffany Self Vicars (Alpha Nu Alumni) recently opened an Etsy shop along with her mother, Joyce. Tiffany and her mom create beautiful personalized items, including bags. They will soon be adding several sports teams to their lineup of logos and designs! Their Etsy shop is called, "It's Personal By TDV". Tiffany and her husband, Mike, recently traveled to Green Bay, Wisconsin, to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending a Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field!

Lindsay Middleton (Alpha Zeta Alumni) and husband, Jared, experienced a quick delivery of their daughter, Reagan, on July 15, 2017 at 10:07 p.m.

Cherokee Layson-Wolf (Epsilon Alumni) was installed as the president of the Maryland Pharmacists Association in June 2017. Way to go, Cherokee! They will be wowed by your leadership skills!

Jess Vickery Kolis (Alpha Beta alumni) and husband, Walter, welcomed their "Rookie of the Year" on July 6, 2017 at 7:41 p.m.. Baby Ben was enjoying pumpkin carving at daycare until he saw the insides of the pumpkin... and then he got really upset! Fortunately, he recovered and was really happy the rest of the day!

Jeanne VanTyle (Phi Alumni) retired from Butler University in June 2017 after 40 years of service. Jeanne was known for her support of students and in particular Phi Chapter. Many of her fellow faculty members commented about how much they would miss her expertise!

Magaly Rodriguez de Bittner (Epsilon)
was elected to the APhA Board of Directors in June 2017. We're very proud of sisters like Magaly, who are in pharmacy leadership positions!

Lauren Robbins (Alpha Zeta) and husband, Dave, welcomed Jonathan Eric Robbins on May 5, 2017 at 12:51 a.m.. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 inches long. Congratulations!

Becky Fore Garrett (Omicron) is planning a wedding to Don Woods in the Spring of 2018. Congratulations!

Tonia Tarter Saettele (Alpha Zeta) and her husband, Christopher, welcomed Camden Christopher Saettele on September 3, 2017 at 2:24 a.m.. He was 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 21 inches. Congratulations!

Karen Ryle (Alpha) was featured in the Massachusetts Pharmacist Association October Spotlight. We're proud of Karen and her numerous accomplishments. She's truly a grand lady of pharmacy!

Marilyn Burton (Alpha Zeta) recently retired (congrats!) and also became President Elect of Illinois JCI (Jaycee) Senate. Marilyn has been very active in the Jaycees over the years and is highly respected by her peers!

Patty Kienle (Alpha Phi Alumni) was recently honored by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as a distinguished alumni. My first thought upon reading this was, "What! No kidding!". Those of us who have known Patty for many years know of her MANY accomplishments in our profession. Patty also recently authored a book on USP Chapter 800 and even held a book signing at the ASHP Summer Meeting!

Nicole Allie (Xi) was featured on South Shore Medical Center Social Media in honor of Pharmacy Week. She is the Director of Pharmacy there and is considered to be the "in-house medication expert".

Starlin Haydon-Greatting (Alpha Zeta) has had a great year for awards! Starlin was honored by LKS with the Vanguard Leadership Award, but she also received the Illinois Pharmacists Association Award for Excellence in Innovation for 2017. Starlin is a highly sought after speaker. I hope you get to hear her in person some day!

Christina Procaccianti (Alpha Rho Alumni) was another one of our LKS awardees this year (Distinguished Young Pharmacist) who was honored by another pharmacy organization. The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy recognized Christina for her services as a provider of Lyme Disease services. Nice work, Christina!

Cedona Watts (Lambda) recently passed her geriatrics board and was granted this certification from Duquesne University! Congratulations!

Robin Bogner (Alpha Beta Alumni) recently visited India for a teaching opportunity in Gurugram. Despite the busy schedule, she had the opportunity to enjoy a bit of sightseeing.

Sara Aja (Alpha Iota) and her husband, Nick, are expecting a baby in January 2018! Best wishes for your pregnancy!

Ashley Robold (Alpha Phi) accepted a position for Acme Pharmacy in the Philadelphia area. She absolutely loves community pharmacy and is so excited for this chapter of her life. Ashley says she has been looking up to Acme pharmacists since she was 7 years old - now that's a lifetime goal that's been realized!

Monica Dutridge Parikh (Alpha Zeta) married Atit Parikh on July 29, 2017. Congratulations!

Kim Bayyouk (Omicron) became engaged to Elias Fanous in July. Keep us posted with wedding details!

Gayle Brazeau (Alpha Mu) was recognized by the Maine Pharmacy Association as the first recipient of the Distinguished Educator Award. We're so very proud of you, Gayle!

Chris and Andre Grass (Alpha Zeta Alumni and Patron) won the St. Jude Dream Home in S. Louis in September. While they have been very happy to support St. Jude for many years, they never dreamed that they would actually be the winners! It's a fabulous 5 bedroom, 5 bath, 2 half-bath, 5 car garage home with a media room and projector, a kitchen with a butler pantry, a finished lower level that includes a wet bar and wine cellar and even a cedar closet! While they both think that it's very cool, it's way more home than these empty-nesters need right now. It was also suggested that they hold Grand Council meetings there, too.... as there's plenty of space for everyone. They also discovered that winning a prize of this magnitude has plenty of work to go along with it just to claim it. The house has gone on the market and hopefully, just the right size family will find it.

I love to be able to feature news about sisters in our newsletter. Many people tell me this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the news, especially when there are pictures!

If something has happened to you, big or small, please let me know. New job? New home? A baby? Engagement? Something serious? Something funny? Send it to me! Send a picture too, if you can. You can send it to [email protected].

I am looking forward to hearing from you!
ASHP Midyear Meeting 2017

ASHP Midyear 2017 will be held in Orlando, Florida in December. Lambda Kappa Sigma will have a booth in the exhibit hall. We've reserved a double space, so we have plenty of room for you to stop by for a meet and greet! Lambs who stopped by for a visit at the APhA meeting in March in San Francisco really enjoyed the casual atmosphere and the sisterhood that was shared.

Grand Council officers, as well as Headquarters staff, will be in attendance at the booth. We would LOVE for you to stop by for a visit. A special gift, featuring one of our new logos, is yours when you visit. We are all very excited about our new look. If you haven't visited the website for a while, please be sure to give it a look! You'll love it!

See EWE in Orlando in December!
