Community Service Council (CSC) did a soft launch of Oklahoma Veteran Connections, the first 360-degree coordinated referral network in Oklahoma at the end of October. After the soft launch, CSC staff started receiving requests and initiating referrals. The qualified provider list will expand as our needs increase and new agencies meet the requirements for participation in our network.
The current fifteen participating agencies provide a wide spectrum of needed services such as housing, education, employment, medical assistance, Veteran Affairs benefit information, transportation and other needs.
This network is enhancing community collaboration and enabling service providers to respond to our veterans needs more efficiently and effectively.

Veteran Employer Survey Launched at Governor's Veteran Services Symposium
At the Governor's Veteran Symposium on Oct. 23, Community Service Council Board Member Denise Reid and CSC's Warrior Partnerships of Eastern Oklahoma Program Manager Pete Luitwieler announced the launch of a veteran employer champion survey, primarily designed by Denise and enhanced by the Warrior Partnerships of Eastern Oklahoma Employment Group. Nineteen organizations have already completed the survey, but we want more to participate--non-profits and for-profits of any size. Please help us help our veterans.

The symposium attracted more than 200 people representing over 125 agencies. Topics were education, employment, mental health and community collaboration. Pete gave an overview of the Oklahoma Veteran Connections program with more than
a dozen service providers also in attendance. Stacy Hester (KiBois Community Action and TAP Consulting) followed with a discussion on the vital role of mentoring in all areas of service to veterans.
One of the more moving moments was when Krysten Isenhower gave a tribute to her brother Brett, a fallen soldier, who died in 2011.

Oklahoma Suicide Rate Call to Action
The department has action plans underway. If you have any questions, contact John Wilson, veterans mental health programs administrator.
The attached two items show Oklahoma veteran suicide data as well as data for Michigan, which ranks second in the nation for veteran suicides.

Habitat for Humanity Accepting Applications from Veterans
During August and October, many veterans collaborated with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in Tulsa. We shared this, along with uplifting photos, in earlier newsletters.
We're now
moving to the next phase -- a critical stage for our veterans. We want help from agencies and individual veterans to help find veterans and their families who would qualify as future Habitat for Humanity homeowners.

Oklahoma Hero: Don Summers
Don Summers served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bairoko during the Korean War. He was also on board the ship during the Operation Castle hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll in 1954 and experienced fallout from those tests that continue to affect his health to this day. Don is currently active with DAV chapter 43 in Pryor as well as Chapter 44 in Claremore. In 2016, he was part of a group from chapter 43 that was featured in the national DAV magazine for their work in locating and marking the graves of service members whose official markers had gone unclaimed for years at a local funeral home.
