TxDOT has kicked off its $2 million project to prepare a draft Environmental Impact Statement for the 36A corridor, a key part of the 36A coalition's plan for a new transportation corridor.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council Transportation Policy Council committed $2 million toward an environmental impact statement to study the potential impact of the development of the Highway 36A corridor. The TPC fully funded development by TxDOT of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the "36A" corridor from US 59S/IH 69S to US 290/ SH6.

"TxDOT recently kicked-off the proposed 36A project," said Patrick Gant, Schematic Design Supervisor project manager for the Texas Department of Transportation - Houston District.

"The project will gather data and facilitate a discussion with stakeholders, agencies, and the general public to define a need and purpose.  From there, we will explore alternative alignments," Gant said.

The goal will be to analyze the need for a corridor, the potential costs, and whether developing the corridor can be done at a cost commensurate with its benefits.

Involving the public will be a key part of the environmental impact study.

The next few months will involve gathering data and preparing information for the project. Next, probably sometime this Spring, a Notice of Intent will be prepared and TxDOT will conduct public scoping meetings to discuss the project.

"Overall, this first phase of the project is anticipated to last two years," Gant said.

Fort Bend Commissioner Andy Meyers, chairman of the coalition, welcomes the launch of the study phase.

"We look forward to seeing what TxDOT produces during this phase, and we welcome public input regarding this corridor project," Meyers said.

The Highway 36A Coalition advocates for free-flowing transportation facilities along its corridor. The Houston region is well set for increased trade with Latin America and the rest of the world. The Coalition anticipates the demand for manufacturing facilities in Brazoria and Fort Bend Counties, and sees the future need for a direct rail link between Rosenberg and Freeport. TxDOT will be central to any transportation solution for our region. Their approach to all modes of transportation is important to us.
