"Persevere with passion. Lead with kindness."
October 2, 2017

Dear Sweeny Families,

September was a month full of learning and leadership! It is incredible to peek into our classrooms and see our learners engaged in their learning. In the month of September we saw classrooms deploy with chromebooks, live out their personal mission statements, collaborate with one another in the Creative Learning Lab and get creative in the Makerspace. Sweeny has been a VERY busy place.

This past week, our learners had the opportunity to attend the Leadership Expo where they learned about 21 student leadership teams.  Last Friday, they brought home their leadership application in their student leadership binder. During the month of October all 400 learners will be serving on a student leadership team and we cannot wait to see our students in action! Be watching for photos. You can help us out by returning the leadership applications by Tuesday, October 3rd.

We can't wait to see you all at the end of the month for conferences where you will get to hear more about all of the awesome things your little leader is doing here at Sweeny! Don't forget to sign up for a time with your child's teacher! Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to call or email!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

When: October 30th and November 2nd
Where: Your child's classroom

Please join us for Parent/Teacher Conferences on either of the nights listed above. Your child's teacher will be in contact with you so you can sign-up for a day and time that works best for you. At Sweeny, we believe that the partnership between the parents and teacher is crucial to the success of our students. Our goal this year is to have 100% of our Sweeny families attend a Parent/Teacher conference.

Enrichment Clubs

Starting in October, students in grades 3-5 will have the opportunity to join an Enrichment Club that meets twice a month during Tiger Time. The clubs are taught by Sweeny specials teacher, Dr. Engelhart, and Mr. Lockmiller. Students had to fill out an application for the top two clubs they wanted to join. To attend the club the students must meet the following criteria.
  • Must have attendance of at least 96%
  • Must have a positive attitude
  • Must have respect for others' ideas
  • Must be responsible and dependable
  • Must strive for academic excellence
  • Must model exemplary behavior and leadership
Students were assigned an Enrichment Club based on their top two choices. The students had the following clubs to choose from.

  • Art Club
  • Sweeny S.T.O.M.P. Crew
  • STEM Station
  • Outdoor Adventure Club
  • Happy Travelers Club
  • One Heart Pantry
  • Techno Team

Be Proactive

I n August and September students have been learning about Habit 1, Be Proactive. This habit means you are in charge of your actions and attitude. We also refer to this as carrying your own weather. Someone who thinks with the end in mind says, "I am a responsible person. I will take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking."

At home, you can discuss with your students how they can be proactive at school and at home.
