Standing Committee on Finance presentation
Federation Executive Director Gabriel Miller presented to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance in St. John's, Newfoundland on October 16. Miller spoke to the value and contributions of the humanities and social sciences and advocated that HSS research receive an equal share of new injections alongside the physical and health sciences, to better balance Canada's overall research portfolio. ED op-ed on post-truth
Read Executive Director Gabriel Miller's thoughts on how Canada needs to confront the causes of a post-truth world in his Canadian Science Policy Centre op-ed . Discussing the future of higher education and research in a post-truth world, Miller indicates that " scholars in the humanities and social sciences, who create knowledge about the way human systems function, and the way that different people think, behave and interact, will have an essential role to play."

On November 25,  Blair Stonechild, Professor of Indigenous Studies at First Nations University of Canada, will speak to " The importance of Indigenous knowledge and spirituality for the future of academia" at the Royal Society of Canada's 2017 Celebration of Excellence. This event is full, but the video will be posted shortly thereafter.

on post-truth

On November 2, the Federation organized a Big Thinking  panel discussion at the Canadian Science Policy Conference in Ottawa, featuring Lisa Kimmel President and CEO, Edelman Canada, Mark Kingwell, Professor of Philosophy, University of Toronto, Rima Wilkes, President, Canadian Sociological Association and moderated by Federation ED Gabriel Miller. A video of the event " Expertise in a post-truth era: How to be a trusted advisor in a low-trust world  " will be available November 9.

Patrick Turmel , Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Director of the social and economic ethics section of Université Laval's Applied Ethics Institute spoke to parliamentarians on October 24 on the topic of "Economic inequality: Should Canada bring back inheritance taxes." Bishop's University offers its students a one-week experiential theatre course. Canadian professor a leader in mental health
Congratulations to Dr. Heather Hadjistavropoulos, Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Regina, on being named one of 150 leading Canadians for mental health. Dr. Hadjistavropoulos founded the Online Therapy Unit at the University of Regina, helping many who might not otherwise have access to psychotherapy, such as those living in remote and rural locations.
