Improving Appetite and Health
Many cats with chronic health conditions, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), have a poor appetite. The decreased intake of food often leads to a deterioration of their condition and death.
Improving appetite is a way to change the course of the disease and
one medication, mirtazapine, is known to help stimulate appetite in cats.
Finding easier methods for clients to deliver medications to their cat companions is one way to help improve cat health. A recent study by Dr. Jessica Quimby looking at safely using and dosing the appetite stimulant mirtazapine by transdermal administration
(on and through the skin) in cats with CKD.
This study will have significant implications for the health of cats, particularly those with chronic illnesses and poor appetites, and help clients, veterinarians and their support staff offer better care for cats.
Dr. Quimby is accepting patients for a clinical trial as part of this
Winn-funded study.
