Educate & Elevate: Campaign Video

AB 705 was signed by Governor Brown last month, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office has received a number of questions regarding the requirements of the bill and next steps in implementation. This law  requires community college districts to maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in math and English within a one-year timeframe by utilizing assessment measures that include high school performance to achieve this goal. T o help you navigate questions from internal and external stakeholders, you can review the AB 705 initial summary and Q&A. More information about implementation will follow.

Related to AB 705, this report by the Public Policy Institute of California, titled Reforming Math Pathways at California's Community Colleges, takes a look at two new reforms in developmental math, known as statistics pathways and compressed math pathways, and compares outcomes for students in those courses compared to students in traditional developmental pathway courses.

CALWORKs report: measuring calworks performance

The California legislature, as part of the human services trailer bill of the 2017-18 budget package, adopted the CALWORKs Outcomes and Accountability Review (Cal-OAR), a  framework for a new performance measurement  and accountability system for the state program that assists very low-income families  with  children. This 24-page report by the Legislative Analyst's Office outlines the  rationales for measuring program performance and details what can - and should - be measured. We highlight this report as an example of the lens through which the legislature could potentially view the AEBG program in the future.

SummitProps2 call for aebg summit proposals

Two weeks remain to submit your presentation proposals for the 2018 AEBG Summit , which will be Jan. 22-23 at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City, with "Together Towards Tomorrow" as the event theme. The deadline is Nov. 15.

Proposals should focus on the impact consortia are having on adult education. Because this is a professional learning event, we want to offer diverse presentations on the following  topics: accelerated learning; curriculum alignment; instructional strategies; data collection, accountability and reporting; annual reporting tips; marketing; collaboration; team building; leveraging funds; technology integration and professional development.

Do you find that some people in your community don't fully understand AEBG or how the program's 71 consortia fit into the adult education mission? The Educate & Elevate California website includes a video that can help with that . This short, highly visual video explains how the state's adult education system is structured and how AEBG helps to improve lives. If you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, we encourage you to take a few minutes to do so and to share it with key influencers and via your social media channels to help develop a greater understanding of AEBG.

The video is a great visual storytelling tool, along with the infographics we shared in last week's newsletter that help to build a business case for support.  You can follow the Educate & Elevate California campaign at @AEBGElevate .

Long Beach City College (LBCC) and the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), the members of the Long Beach Adult Education Consortium, wanted to find a way to create seamless transitions from LBUSD's adult education program to college classes at LBCC. The members already had done a significant amount of work to develop a collaborative relationship and had worked together to improve adult basic education and English as a second language offerings in the region - and they wanted to further their work by providing adult learners with the tools they needed to be successful in college. Read more about how these members worked together to address the challenge.
