Donate now for Colorado Gives Day_

Support local climate action by scheduling your Colorado Gives Day donation to YVSC!

Last weekend, I was able to sneak in one more ride on Emerald with the dark storm clouds moving in and the last leaves falling off the aspen trees. Now it really feels like Thanksgiving and I am thankful! Thankful for our nonprofit and government partners who have helped to build a healthy and resilient community. Thankful for all of you in our community who work everyday to live and work sustainably.

YVSC is guided by the belief that sustainability is a community project.  We're all in this together , and YVSC needs your generous support more than ever. Please help us continue our work to build a sustainable community, fight climate change and preserve what we all love about the Yampa Valley by donating to YVSC on Colorado Gives Day and by taking action to reduce your own impact on the environment.

Warmly,

Sarah Jones

Fight climate change locally, support YVSC on Colorado Gives Day

I Gave Early
We are already seeing the impacts of climate change locally--shorter snow season length, earlier spring run-off, hotter, drier summers, and the resulting drought and wildfires. The high-mountain environment that we all love more vulnerable now than ever before.
Supporting YVSC's work is one of the most effective things you can do to ensure the Yampa Valley you treasure is protected for generations to come.

Incentive funds boost the value of every dollar you donate on Colorado Gives Day. Join the local Yampa Valley Gives philanthropic movement by scheduling  your online donation to YVSC for 12/5/17.

America Recycles Day
Wednesday, November 15

I pledge to recycle
Recycling is one of the easiest actions to take every single day to protect  the environment--at home, at work, at school and on the go. Americans recycle and compost 87 million tons annually, which reduces carbon emissions as much as taking 39 million cars off the road for a year!

In observance of America Recycles Day and to encourage our community to reduce, reuse and recycle, YVSC will be handing out reusable shopping bags at City Market, Safeway and Natural Grocers at noon on November 15. Pick up a copy of YVSC's A-Z Recycling Guide and get your "Green Bag" while supplies last!

Local students will be taking the pledge to recycle on America Recycles Day. Will you take the pledge?

In honor of America Recycles Day and to help increase recycling rates in our community, below are some resources for hard-to-recycle items:
  • Political yard signs: Plastic bag-like signs can be recycled with plastic grocery bags at Safeway or City Market. Metal stakes can go to the scrap metal collection bin at Aces High. Please remove all plastic or cardboard signs from the frames before recycling.
  • Scrap metal: Axis Steel also accepts scrap metal for free at Aces High. D & D Enterprises and Waste Management accept scrap metal and appliances without Freon for a fee.
  • Paint: Ace Hardware and and Sherwin-Williams accept 5 gallons of paint per customer per visit at no charge.
  • Lightbulbs: Yampa Valley Electric Association, in partnership with Brite Ideas, is now accepting CFL and tube lights during business hours at their office on Elk River Road.
For more information about additional hard-to-recycle items and the above materials, go to YVSC's online A - Z Recycling Guide (in Spanish or English).

New energy efficient mortgage option
Do you want a drafty home_

You don't ski with your jacket unzipped... so why would you buy a d rafty home?

Energy Smart Colorado has introduced a NEW Energy Efficient Mortgage product that is available for most FHA and Fannie Mae mortgages. This option allows homebuyers to roll the cost of many energy upgrades into a mortgage. These funds can be used for additional insulation, a new efficient furnace, lighting system upgrades, Energy Star appliances, and storm windows or potentially switching from single pane to efficient double-pane windows. In some cases, this can help homeowners convert to a more energy efficient heating fuel. The loan is a good option for buyers investing in a residential property in need of an energy efficiency overhaul.
