Port Employees' Scholarship Fund - Now Accepting Applications

The Port Employees' Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications through Friday, March 2, 2018. Students in their senior year at an Oakland Unified School District high school are eligible to apply. This is the 24th year that the Port Employees' Scholarship Fund is offering scholarships to local students that will attend a four year or a two year college, or a trade/technical program. Every year, Port employees donate and raise funds for the program. They have  awarded 374 scholarships, totaling $850,000.

Dia de los Muertos Festival

The Port enjoyed helping kids decorate sugar skull s and sharing information about Port community programs at t he  Unity Council Día de los Muertos  Festival in the Fruitvale Village. Nearly 300 kids participated in this free activity and took home sugar skulls to share with their families. 

 

McClymonds High School Visits the Port for Career Day

The Port hosted McClymonds  High School for Career Day. The students  learned about Port careers in aviation , communications  and engineering, and toured the seaport .

 

Local Business Contractors Learn Port Contracting 101 Basics

Local business contractors joined the third annual Port Contracting  101 class at Merritt College. The session covered basics of how to bid for  public works projects with the Port. The next Port session is on Prevailing Wage/Labor Compliance on Thursday, December 7, 2017 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at the Port of Oakland in the Exhibit Room. You can register here.

     

Trucks in West Oakland Community Workshop

The  Port held a "Trucks in West Oakland - Community Workshop" for the development of the West Oakland Truck Management Plan. This workshop is the first in a series that will be used in a City of Oakland/Port of Oakland Truck Management Plan scheduled to be completed in Summer 2018. These workshops are one of the many ways we are engaging with our community.  

     

Oakland Black Cowboy Association's 43rd Parade & Festival
October 7, 2017

The Port hosted a western games booth and shared information about Port community programs at the Oakland Black Cowboy Association's 43rd Parade & Festival. Children and their families played fun games like horseshoes, ring toss and Connect Four. 

     

Save the Bay Day in Jack London Square
October 7, 2017

Jack London Square was home to the second annual Bay Day established by the non-profit, Save The Bay. Bay Day is dedicated to connecting Bay Area communities with the unique environment of the San Francisco Bay. Port employees shared information about their projects to protect our Bay water, like restoring local wetlands.

 

World Wide Women Girls' Festival

The Port of Oakland sponsored local non-profits and Oakland Unified School District students to attend the World Wide Women Girls' Festival. It was a day-long celebration of power and possibility for girls and their families at the Impact Hub in Oakland. Girls participated in engineering  and coding classes, maker's space activities, sports and fitness, and cooking classes.

     

Port and City Slicker Farms Provide Fun Activities
 at Eat Real Festival

Eat Real's Family Fun Zone provided hands-on activities for people of all ages. The Port hosted a table where youngsters learned to make container crane models. City Slicker Farms joined the Port table to help kids learn how to grow perennials. City Slicker Farms empowers West Oakland community members to meet the basic need for healthy food for themselves and their families by creating organic, sustainable, and high-yield urban farms and backyard gardens. 

     

 Mayor Libby Schaaf Visits Port Volunteers at
California Coastal Cleanup Day
September 16, 2017
 
The Port and volunteers helped cleanup trash and debris to beautify our local waterways at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park and East Creek Slough. Mayor Libby Schaaf visited our volunteers at East Creek Slough and celebrated their efforts. These cleanups were part of the California Coastal Cleanup Day efforts where 54,532 volunteers picked up more than 510,000 pounds of garbage.
