Honoring CA Veterans

In honor of the 489 Columbus Academy alumni who have served our country in one of the armed forces, as well as the six current coaches, faculty/staff, facility and security team members (Jasiliki Davidson, Neal O'Brien and Dan Olexio, United States Army -- Dennis Gilman, Matt Mele and Tim Metcalf, United States Air Force) who have also served in the military, the school bell atop Morris Hall will ring 495 times Friday morning since Veterans Day falls on the following day. Academy's Camerata will sing "America the Beautiful" to conclude the event, which will take place in our Senior Quad prior to the start of classes. From our very first graduate (Carey Evans, Class of 1914) to our first alumnae to serve -- Mary Beth Ray & Jamie Scheiman, both from our Class of 2006 -- to Tyler Mallon '07, who recently assumed command of the U.S. Army's Echo Company, Columbus Academy commends the spirit of service its many alumni, faculty, staff, coaches, parents and friends have chosen to uphold.

Alumni veterans, please join the Columbus Academy community as we honor Veterans Day on Friday, November 10. Stand with the students, faculty and staff as the Morris Hall bells chime once for every veteran in the Columbus Academy community. Kindly RSVP to (614) 509-2290 or [email protected].

Remembering Rainey Taylor

Amidst our Reunion Weekend festivities, members of the Academy community gathered to honor the legacy of former faculty member Rainey S. Taylor Jr., who passed away on August 22 after a legendary career as an educator. The event was hosted by John Exline '64, our current Rainey S. Taylor History Chair, and reflections were also shared by retired faculty member Kevin Morrin and alumni Bill McMenamy '58, Tom Hadley '71 and T.D. Decker '77 as well as Rainey's daughter, Mary Ten Eyck Taylor. To the many who were students and colleagues of Mr. Taylor, we hope you enjoy this video of the entire ceremony.

A Look Back At Reunion Weekend

Reunion alumni enjoyed a weekend of reunion festivities in October. The weekend began with tours of campus and the new facilities, followed by a Welcome Back Reception in the dining hall to bring together all reunion classes with former and veteran faculty. The Golden Alumni Breakfast honored alumni celebrating their 50th reunion and above. Individual classes gathered throughout the weekend for their class reunions.

Thank you to everyone who attended and shared Reunion Weekend with us! Thank you to the class agents and volunteers who helped to make the weekend a success!

Anne Horton, who began our field hockey program when Columbus Academy became coed in the early 1990s, earned her 500th career victory last month when her varsity squad defeated Lancaster 9-0. With several more wins since then, her career record now stands at 506-60-37. In her 27 seasons guiding the Vikings, she has compiled a 432-34-27 overall record with 10 state championships, six state runner-up teams and 21 district titles. During last month's postgame ceremony honoring her milestone, Head of School Melissa Soderberg read an official proclamation from Governor John Kasich recognizing Coach Horton as the winningest field hockey coach in the State of Ohio.
Columbus Academy announced Shaka Arnold as its next Head of Middle School last month. Shaka's 16 years of independent school experience includes leadership roles at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a five-year public and community relations stint with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

Sports News

This fall was truly one for the record books as Academy's varsity athletic teams won league titles in football, girls tennis, boys cross country, girls soccer, boys soccer and golf. Our golfers went on to win sectional and district titles on their way to the program's eighth state championship, setting Division II tournament records for single-round (295) and overall (596) team scores. In girls tennis, our squad was Division II state runner-up for the sixth time while freshman Sydni Ratliff was league player of the year and state singles runner-up in addition to district champion along with CA's doubles tandem of Georgia Tuckerman and Himaja Reddy. Another state runner-up performance came in field hockey after the program's 21
st district title and 16th appearance in the state championship.

Our football team earned a share of its second MSL-Ohio title and its first playoff victory since 2006 by winning 13-6 at Union Local last Friday. The 9-2 Vikes play top seed and undefeated Wheelersburg at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Chillicothe Herrnstein Field. In cross country, our boys placed third in the state for their most successful season in program history while Annalise Grammel led our girls with her second-straight All-Ohio performance. Boys soccer claimed its seventh district title in the past 11 seasons, and our girls were just a penalty kick shootout shy of repeating as district champions. Our volleyball program had record participation with three upper school teams, and the varsity squad closed its regular season with wins over Bexley and Grandview, further confirming it is a program on the rise. Academy also won JV league titles in golf and boys cross country, and we earned first-ever championships in middle school girls soccer and 5th-6th grade football.
