Bookseller Recommendations

Pete Recommends:

Vacationland by John Hodgman
This book is both heartfelt and hilarious.  Hodgman is full of clever observations on so many subjects, such as facial hair, middle age, the horror of freshwater clams, and the painful beaches of Maine, which have tried to kill him.  I have been to many of the areas he mentions in the book, and he is spot-on correct about them!

William Recommends:

Legacy Of Spies by John Le Carre
At the age of 86, Le Carre offers up one of the best books he has ever written.  This puzzle-box of a novel unfolds in unexpected ways as we follow a man being interrogated by the new MI6 over long-forgotten and long-buried secrets involving an operation gone terribly wrong.  Le Carre plays with morality, ethics, and how different generations view the spy game, and it makes for a riveting read.  As an added bonus, George Smiley returns!

Lorna Recommends:

Malagash by Joey Comeau
Each family that faces a terminal illness travels its own unique path. This beautifully written novel tells the story of a daughter who believes she has found a way to memorialize her father as he lays in the hospital dying of cancer. Don't let this stop you from reading this perfect little novel. The poignant moments and the power of this family is a beautiful thing to behold.

Gillian Recommends :

The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon
In 1917, a freighter left NY laden with explosives intended for the trenches of France. Seeking refuge from German U-boats in Halifax harbor, it collided with a Norwegian relief ship which ignited its deadly cargo. The ensuing explosion levelled the city, killing and wounding thousands. The City of Boston immediately rushed in to help, transforming the dynamics of US-Canadian relations. Even now, a Christmas tree arrives on Boston Common each year as an expression of gratitude from Nova Scotia. Bacon gives a gripping account of a staggering but largely-unknown historical event.

"The fire of literacy is created by the emotional sparks between a child, a book, and the person reading. It isn't achieved by the book alone, nor by the child alone, nor by the adult who's reading aloud -- it's the relationship winding between all three, bringing them together in easy harmony."
-- Mem Fox
