We've seen a lot of suffering lately--hurricanes and tropical storms, wildfires, and even man-made tragedies like the attacks in Las Vegas and New York last month. When events like these happen, it can feel like God has abandoned us. In the face of so much darkness and sorrow, I cling to the promise of heaven. There, when we see Jesus face to face, "He will wipe every tear from [our] eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain" (Revelation 4:21).

But until you and I make it to heaven, God has given us the ability to work to spread his kingdom here on earth, to make the world a better place. And in 1 Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us to "stand firm" in the face of death, to praise God "who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ," and to "give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain" (1 Corinthians 15:57-58).

It is my prayer that you can take comfort in knowing that you are, in truth, making the world a better place.

What if every child could go to school?
We're taking the time this month to ask what the world would look like if every child could go to school.

In America and other developed nations, sometimes it's easy to take for granted the impact that access to education can have. One stat we found made the startling claim that if every child left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people would be lifted out of poverty.

You can be part of making that dream a reality.

The Jack Del Rio Foundation is joining Catholic World Mission in support of Mano Amiga Schools.  We got to ask Linda Del Rio, wife of Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio, about how her faith and football have made generous living a priority.
