The Holy Bowl

The First Holy Bowl Football Program
HOLY BOWL I

Our first football game with our Diocesan rival, San Joaquin Memorial High School, was played on the infield of an auto raceway in Oildale on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks after Garces opened in 1947. Back then we were known as the "Shamrocks".  This Saturday's 52nd Holy Bowl in Fresno is now the oldest parochial school rivalry in the history of the CIF Central Section.  The winner will be awarded the Bishop Donohoe Trophy after the game.  SJM leads the all-time series, 27-21-3.

RAM FACTS:
The football game has grown into Holy Bowl Saturday, which now includes competitions in volleyball, tennis, golf and water polo, as well as a football Mass for both schools' athletes and various pre-game and halftime ceremonies.

The Thez-Carroll Cup, a perpetual trophy awarded to the school with the most wins in varsity sports during each school year, was created by the schools in 1996.  Since then, Garces leads the all-time series, 18-0-3.
Garces Band - Holy Bowl Reminder

The Garces Band travels to the Holy Bowl in Fresno tomorrow! All band members must report to the Garces music room by 1:45 PM on Saturday.  The band will stop at the Tulare Outlet Mall for a late lunch/early dinner and then head up to the Holy Bowl varsity game at San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno. The band will return to Garces at or near midnight...GO RAMS!

Congratulations Boys Water Polo

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys Water Polo Team!  They went undefeated and won the Tulare Union Tournament last weekend.  A special shout out to  Eric Klang  who was named the Tournament MVP and to Grayden Reynolds for being selected All-Tourney.  Members of the water polo team are:
Lee Begin, Oliver Oxley, Eric Klang, Evan Berry, George Rice, Ostin Woodfin, Graydon Reynolds, Joe Starr, Josh Pavletich, Ryan Kammeraad, and Gary Lyles.  The boys are coached by Jason Gall.
Congratulations Joseph Campbell!

HOMETOWN SPORTS
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Garces Ram Joseph Campbell was selected by Hometown Sports as their Offensive Player of the Week after Joe's performance against Tehachapi.  Joe threw for three touchdowns and ran in for one more.  Joseph is a sophomore and as one fan put it "he's just getting started."

Seaside Invitational Medalists

Congratulations to our Garces Rams who medaled at the Seaside Invitational in Ventura last Saturday.  They were Allie Arretche, Abraham Gonzalez, Natalina Antongiovanni, and Ethan Gandola.  Way to go Rams!
Please Join Us -  Mass of the Holy Spirit
Message from Brian Cobb
Director of Campus Ministry

On Wednesday September 20th, 2017, Garces will be celebrating the  annual Mass of the Holy Spirit in Monsignor Leddy Hall (MLH). The Liturgy  is to begin at 11:15 AM and Bishop Ochoa is tentatively scheduled to preside  over the Mass.

As we do every year, we begin the academic year by seeking guidance  and inspiration from the Holy Spirit. In the reading from Isaiah, the Prophet  speaks of the Spirit of God resting on God's anointed. It is a spirit of wisdom,  understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.  At the celebration of a Mass of the Holy Spirit, we are asking the Holy Spirit  to imbue all of our endeavors in the upcoming year with the fruits and gifts  of the Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, right  judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe in God's
presence. These gifts allow believers to be brought into fuller communion  with God and see His work in our relationships, our work, and every part of  our lives. The Holy Spirit is a conduit through which we ask for the God of  wisdom to make us wise. The entire community comes together to pray for  that wisdom for us and for each other through the intercession of the Spirit.  For this reason, we humbly invite parents and siblings to come join  and celebrate with the Garces family and Bishop Ochoa.
Architects in Training

Garces added a Civil Engineering and Architecture class this year to the STEM program.  The class is open to third year STEM students.  The class is well under way with the guidance of new Garces instructor, Mr. Lucas Choate.  Mr. Choate is also a Garces alumnus. He graduated in 2006.  Mr. Choate already has the students designing and building mini-models. The photo is the top three as selected by the class.

Nice job Rams!
Chemistry & S'Mores

Who says Chemistry can't be fun and engaging?  Not new chemistry teacher Mrs. Becky Meek!

The class is beginning their Matter-Properties and Changes Chapter. In the lab, the students focused on the physical and chemical properties of the reactants and noted if any of the properties seemed to change. But the best part was they all got to enjoy a s'more during chemistry class while learning about chemical reactions.

As Mrs. Meek said, "Fun!"

Students pictured are  Marc Martinez, Kelela Strahan, and Joseph Campbell.
Congratulations Rams!

The Rams FC Indoor Soccer Team won their Quarterfinal game last night 5-2. They will play their Semi-Final game next Thursday. The team includes: Alejandro Garcia, Abraham Gonzalez, Moises Gonzalez, Alex Halevy, Alvaro Lopez, Angel Navarro, Andres Ornelas, Ivan Ornelas, Mark Pandol, Aldo Pantoja, Jaime Tiscareno, Richard Hall, Luke Champness, Manuel Leal, and Coach Finch.
Fall Play Auditions

This year's fall play is "The Three Muskateers". Auditions will be Monday the 18th in MLH between 3:00 - 5:00 PM. Students will need to stay for at least a half an hour to audition and should come prepared.  They will need to play-fight, move and cold read from the play.  The roles include a Snape-like creepy villain, a vicious woman willing to cut the men down to size, and of course, heroic Musketeers - both men and women.

A brief synopsis of the play: The story, set in 1625, begins with d'Artagnan who sets off for Paris in search of adventure. Along with d'Artagnan goes Sabine, his sister, the quintessential tomboy. Sent with d'Artagnan to attend a convent school in Paris, she poses as a young man - d'Artagnan's servant - and quickly becomes entangled in her brother's adventures. Soon after reaching Paris, d'Artagnan encounters the greatest heroes of the day, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the famous musketeers, and he joins forces with his heroes to defend the honor of the Queen of France. In so doing, he finds himself in opposition to the most dangerous man in Europe, Cardinal Richelieu. Even more deadly is the infamous Countess de Winter, known as Milady, who will stop at nothing to revenge herself on d'Artagnan - and Sabine - for their meddlesome behavior.

Senior Sunrise

Senior Sunrise was a special moment on our campus Monday morning.  The seniors reflected on the "Son" and Christ's love for them along with the rising of the "Sun" and the memories they will create and the legacy they will leave.  The seniors also took a moment to pray for all those affected by the 9/11 terrorist attack.

"From the rising of the sun to its setting let the name of the LORD be praised." ~Psalm 113:3.
9/11 Remembrance

On Monday, September 11th, the Garces Student Body gathered in the Quad to honor the memory of the victims of 9/11, a day we will never forget. The students heard a story from Mr. Brian Cobb about a fireman's coat - one with names & numbers written on it.  A coat that Mr. Cobb saw and commented to his friend "that's a cool looking coat with the names and numbers on it."  His friend shared that it was much more than a "cool" coat. The firemen who were going into the World Trade Center on 9/11 knew there was a good chance they were not coming out, so they made a list for their loved ones so they would know that they perished in the building.  They made that list by writing their name and station number on the coat.  That coat serves to remind all of us to never forget.  To remember the innocent victims of a senseless act of terrorism and the heros who gave up their lives to save those that they could.  The students all prayed together, listened to a beautiful patriotic song, and observed a moment of silence. May God bless all those who lost family and friends on 9/11.
Happy 70th Garces!

Garces Memorial High School opened its door 70 years ago on September 10, 1947.  On Wednesday, the school hosted a birthday party for Garces.  The students gathered in the quad and sang "happy birthday" and were treated to party hats and cupcakes.  Another great day to be a Garces Ram!
Holy Smoke BBQ

Director of Campus Affairs

Dear Parents,

The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time at Garces.  It is such a blessing to have all our students back on campus along with our new freshmen class and transfer students. The students are the heart and soul of our campus.  All the sounds of what high school should be are all around and serve to remind all of us at Garces how blessed we are to have such a wonderful and spirit filled student body.

The Mehnga Sanghera Collaborative Learning Center is a busy place on our campus and it is a joy to see so many students in here taking advantage of the collaborative learning environment.  At times, it is a little loud, but that is part of the process of students working together.  We have two quiet rooms for those who need a quiet place to study.   Loaner iPads, charging stations, Apple TVs and printers are available in the Student Center. If you haven't seen the center yet, please stop by the next time you are on campus.

The Garces Parent Club is working on several projects this school year.  Their focus is on helping with the spiritual growth of our students and parents along with the social aspects of being part of the Garces Ram family - including receptions after some of our Masses and outreach to our families during times of need. We also have a group of parent volunteers who will work with Mr. Blaine Geissel and his business class on remodeling the Student Store.  If you have an interest in being more involved, please come to our next meeting on October 26th at 8:00 AM or email us at [email protected].

The Garces Alumni Board will continue to work on the Hall of Honor and the Garces Alumni Scholarship this school year.  If you have someone who you would like to nominate for the Hall of Honor, please do so.  The board can only vote in those who are nominated.  The nomination form is available on the Garces website.  Nominations will be accepted until January 26, 2018. Also, if you know of an alumnus who would like to send their child to Garces but needs some financial assistance to do so, please tell them we have an Alumni Scholarship they can apply for.  Applications are due by April 1st and the application is available through the Admissions Office. If you have any questions about the Hall of Honor or the Alumni Scholarship, you can email us at [email protected]

The Garces Yearbook is underway and you can share your photos with the yearbook staff for consideration. All you need to do is download the Replay It app to your phone, create an account, and select Garces Memorial.  It is super easy to upload your photos directly to the Yearbook photo gallery - just select the photos and hit the upload button.  Our editors this year are Emma Antongiovanni and Maggie Waguespack and they, along with the rest of the yearbook staff, have big plans for an amazing yearbook.

As always, if you have news to share about your student - especially if it's an accomplishment outside of Garces - please send it in so that we can publish it in our weekly newsletter.  Or if we missed something, please let us know. Our students are so talented and it is a pleasure to share their successes with the Garces community.  You can email your photos or questions to [email protected]

Thank you for sending your child to Garces. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your child's spiritual journey and academic education.
