This Week at St Timothy's
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

This Week
Today is the Feast of All Saints
A major feast in the life of the Church, All Saints is the celebration of those recognized by the universal church as having lived lives of heroic faith and virtue and are now in heaven where they intercede for us, the church militant (Revelation 8.3-4).
Liturgical Celebrations for All Saints
Morning Prayer - 8.00am
Low Mass - 8.15am
Low Mass - 12.00pm (Church)
Evening Prayer - 4.45pm

This coming Sunday, November 5, we will celebrate All Saints as an external solemnity.
Tomorrow is the Feast of All Souls
Please join us for a Requiem Mass for the Feast of All Souls on Thursday, November 2 at 6:30 PM. The choir will chant the Requiem Mass setting from the Liber Usualis, a book of commonly used Gregorian chants dating back to the 11th century.
"More than enough" is a line from the Book of Exodus. Moses instructed the Israelites in the Lord's commands. They were to keep the Sabbath and to build the Tabernacle with their time, talent, and treasure. It is an amazing scene of dedication and devotion. The craftsmen and artisans built, the skillfull women spun, and all brought from their resources to create a place of adoration for the Lord. The response was so great, that the designers and builders asked Moses to call the people off, because their gifts were "more than enough" to do the work of the Lord.

We know that God has given us all more than enough and we know that when we respond in faith, the Church will have more than enough to do the work the Lord has commanded us to do. During the next month, members from our parish will share their story of faith and stewardship and how the Lord always gives us what we need and that upon reflection, it was more than enough.

I ask that we all prayerfully reflect on this story in Exodus and how we, with our gifts of time, time, and treasure together, can be an image of God's provision which is always more than enough.

A note on Sunday attendance | Fr Steve
Ever since July, attendance on Sunday has been off a bit. We are average about five or six fewer folks on Sunday compared to last year. I know many have been traveling and many are finding other commitments are taking them away on Sunday mornings. May we all strive with God's help to make Sunday morning worship our weekly priority, so we may find strength in the Sacraments and comfort in the fellowship of our brothers and sisters.

It is easy to get out of the habit and rhythm of prayer and worship. Time is one of the Tempter's favorite, and easiest, methods to drive a wedge between us and Our Lord. ~ Fr Steve
From the Choir Loft | Christin Barnhardt
As we celebrate the external solemnity of All Saints this Sunday, the children and youth choirs will help lead our singing at the 11am mass.

We will sing all eight stanzas of the familiar hymn "For all the saints (No.287)," singing half of the hymn at the beginning of mass and half at the end. The fourth stanza states:
O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Though Ralph Vaughan Williams published this hymn in 1906, its tune name  Sine Nomine means "without name" and follows the Renaissance tradition of naming certain compositions "Sine Nomine" if they were not settings for preexisting tunes.

Darwall's 148th is the tune name for Sunday's Gradual Hymn, "Ye holy angels bright (No.625)," because the tune was first published as John Darwall's setting for Psalm 148. As in "For all the saints," we sing about the contrast between the souls who are at rest with and continually praising God and those of us who continue to struggle and toil below:
Ye "saints" who toil below, adore your heavenly King,
and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing;
take what he give and praise him still,
through good or ill, whoever lives!

The children and youth will lead us singing many cradle Episcopalians' favorite childhood hymn "I sing a song of the saints of God." Do you know which saints were a doctor, a queen, a shepherdess, a soldier, a priest, and one slain by a beast. The choir will sing Ralph Vaughan Williams' "O how amiable" which is a mosaic of sorts because it includes texts from Psalm 84 (O how amiable are thy dwellings), Psalm 90:17 (The glorious majesty of the Lord), and the first stanza of the hymn "O God our help in ages past."

See you Sunday!

Thanks in advance to all who come together as community to offer hospitality to our homeless guests this winter. We are changing lives (our own, our guests, even our city) one relationship, one meal, one shared evening at a time. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or if you're looking for other ways to serve. Feel free to share this link with others who want to volunteer, too! We will offer on-site volunteer training each evening at 7pm for volunteers serving that evening--more info on other trainings coming soon.  Hope to see you at the Shelter!

Thanks & Peace,

Our Common Life
Remembering Bill Bloxham | Katie Bryant
May light perpetual shine upon Bill Bloxham. Winston-Salem lost a gentle soul on Monday morning. Bill Bloxham died in the restroom at Hardee's of unknown causes. Last January, Bill sustained severe and lasting injuries when some high school kids assaulted him under the bridge where he was resting. Bill has been visiting us at City with Dwellings community center over the past couple of months as he was finally able to be back out and about in the community. He was reconnecting and trying to make a difference in the community. He shared his excitement over the new downtown library, as he was an avid reader and was always doing research. He voiced concerns over the needs of our homeless community, especially the women, and would always check in with me to make sure we were aware of the vulnerable ones on the street and he would offer advice on how to help them. Bill's sight was compromised in the January attack, and so he found himself advocating on behalf of all vision-impaired people at the new library. Bill will be laid to rest according to his wishes, accompanied by the Moravian Brass, as he used to be a horn player with them.

We've lost a few dear homeless friends this past year. Their lives are a gift to us-- Bill and Star and Bill and Denise and so many others give a face, a life, a to "homelessness". And each person is so much more than that. Our relationships with them draw us closer to that which is holy, the brokeness (and redemption) of Jesus Christ. Bill Bloxham had such a gentleness to offer in spite of his harsh world--I pray we approach each new person God puts in our paths with the same spirit of generosity and hope that Bill shared with us.

Stories of people like Bill happen each and everyday--and City with Dwellings is seeking to do our best to connect people to the life-giving resources and basic things they need through community and hope. Come and be a part of ending homelessness through building community--you can do this in the comfort of your own church! St.Tim's Overflow Shelter opens on December 1st and is part of a collaborative effort with City with Dwellings to offer hospitality (building relationships that lead to housing!) with our homeless guests. Come and serve any night at Drake Hall--details can be found at www.citywithdwellings.org or you can sign-up directly at http://signup.com/go/eDiCOAf

Vestry Reflection | Beckie McLean
When we first moved to Winston-Salem and searched for a church, that’s really all we were doing; searching for a church to attend. We’d get up on a Sunday morning, and go to church for one hour, and feel like we’d done something good. My husband even had a joking term for it; “Mc-churching”. Just as eating at McDonald’s was a generic dining event, Mc-churching was also a generic event, lacking in meaning and depth. Then we found St. Timothy’s, and realized we weren’t just looking for a church, we were seeking a church home. Fast-forward many years later, we were regular attendees, but our involvement was still pretty superficial and anything but transformational. There were many times I felt a tug when things were going on and help was needed, something telling me to become more involved. I always hesitated. I am not sure why, but I always kept involvement at arm’s length. I suppose I told myself that since I had 3 young children, a job and a busy life, that there was no room for other things and that it was okay. I mean, someone else would always volunteer, right?

I finally decided to volunteer to be an altar server, and thus began an amazing transformation. I decided to offer up more of myself; more of my time, and more of whatever else I had to offer that could be of use in the ministries of St. Timothy’s. So many things here can bring personal and spiritual growth; the Daily Office, Mass, Formation, and so many others. But the really fascinating thing is that those things we do inside our walls make possible what happens outside of our walls, especially our outreach. The work of the homeless shelter, the St. Michael chapel, and the Society of St. Joseph of Arimathea are all examples of outreach that are possible because of what happens inside our walls when we worship together in community.

How does it happen? Come and be present on Sunday mornings. Attend the special Masses. Attend Morning and Evening Prayer and Mass when your work permits. Come and be with your church family. Whenever you feel the Holy Spirit “tug” at you, respond. Just say “yes”. Whenever you are participating in the liturgies, don’t just read the words; say them and let them soak into your heart. Making the conscious decision to go deeper leads to undeniable transformation and the realization that this is where you belong.

My life is still busy, just in different ways than it was those many years ago. But my involvement at St. Timothy’s continues to bless me in countless ways.
