a message from the lhs principal
|
Welcome to the new school year! Special thanks
go to our
Student Ambassadors, Langley Link Mentors
and our
SGA for the great welcome to our new students and freshmen.
I'd also like to recognize our
cheerleaders, dance team, and drum line
, who added enthusiasm to the school year kick-off, and the
class parents
who stuffed BTS packets and handed them out. The
PTSA has also been instrumental in helping begin the year on a positive note
by hosting a much-appreciated breakfast for our staff and starting to appropriate funds for student programs.
The first week of school went by quickly with all students watching videos on Student Rights and Responsibilities and "Chasing Dreams,"
the theme of our Langley Read (click here to watch). This week, students will view a student-prepared video on the Langley Honor Code which will be posted on our website soon. On Friday, we will view two videos in commemoration of 9/11. We are watching these not to remind ourselves of the horror of that day, but rather to show us how noble we are in moments of crisis. In those times we are able to come together to elevate ourselves for a higher purpose. We just need to look at the recent events in Houston to see what good we are capable of. Click here to view (video 1, video 2).
Some other quick news: Back to School Night is Tues, Sept 12, 7 pm. All parents will begin the night in their child's first period class. Please bring a copy of your child's schedule with you. You can access your student's schedule from Parent Vue. All information was also sent home in a KIT message on Mon, Sept 5. Due to limited parking, we will have shuttle buses from St. Luke's Catholic Church beginning at 6 pm.
I encourage you to park at the church and ride the shuttle since the school parking lot will fill-up quickly.
Late Buses will begin on Wed, Sept 13.
They will depart Langley at approximately 4:30 pm.
We will move into our new library, visual arts, and world language rooms on Sept 25.
Room numbers will be changing, but your child will be made aware of the change.
Lastly, we will be participating in a coin drive for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This initiative will be done by all the schools in our pyramid. Our Leadership class will be organizing the drive, which will be conducted through third period. We just want students to contribute their spare change. All money will go to the Red Cross for their relief efforts.
I hope you had a good summer and are quickly adjusting to the early opening of school!
~ Fred Amico, LHS Principal

This is a friendly reminder to always drive slowly and safely on school grounds.
There are many activities going on around Langley. As this is the case, groups have to be creative when looking for space to work. Our fabulous Marching Band actually practices in our parking lot after school. This gives the director, Mr. Martin, a bird's eye view of the formations as he watches the group from the roof top.
Please observe the Marching Band practice area designated by cones in the Langley parking lot and move to the right as you enter.
There is no parking or driving in this area when the cones are up.
The safety of our students is our foremost concern. We appreciate your cooperation.

will continue on
Fri,
Sept 8 from 3:15-5:30 pm and callback auditions will be on Mon, Sept 11 from 3:15-6 pm. Auditions are open to all Langley students. Those interested may sign-up on the bulletin board in the Black Box theatre or contact drama teacher Valerie Karasek,

band:
This Sat, Sept 9, members of Langley's fast-growing band program will be walking through the local community, seeking Tag Day donations. Tag Day is the band's only fundraiser, and community financial support is crucial to make up the shortfall under the Fairfax County budget cuts. Donations are tax deductible
and the money will be used by the band to repair instruments and purchase new instruments, music, color guard uniforms, and equipment. The band program continues to grow and comprises our exciting, award-winning marching band and color guard, a jazz band, and three concert bands, including our nationally-acclaimed Wind Symphony. Look for Langley band members in your neighborhood on Saturday and consider donating to this great band! We would greatly appreciate your support! Please click here for more band info.
