Over the next few weeks, many of our
seniors will receive college acceptances -- along with their evil twin, college rejections. It's an exciting time for them . . . but an anxious one, too. Last week,
The Wall Street Journal reported students are increasingly facing a barrage of unwelcome college-related questions from adults, such as
"What's your top choice school?" and
"What kind of SAT scores do you need to get into that school?" Unsure of where they'll end up or whether their scores will cut the mustard,
many students are loathe to answer.
Adding to anxiety for an increasing number of students, the uncertainty about where they're going to college doesn't necessarily end in spring. The percentage of
students placed on college wait lists has been rising. Some
may not know where they're going until August. Talking about it with you or me is likely not how they'll wish to pass the time.
Are you guilty of asking seniors college questions? I know I am. To me, not asking a senior about college is like not asking a recently engaged couple about their wedding plans. We're excited for our soon-to-be graduates! Eager to celebrate their success. Our
questions are understandable. They're just not advisable.
For the sake of our Saxons' stress levels, let's all do our best to keep our curiosity about college in check.

You're invited to a town hall meeting to discuss budget issues and other FCPS school-related topics. The meeting will feature School Board members Janie Strauss and Ryan McElveen and a FCPS budget official. The meeting will take place on Mon, March 20, at 7 pm in the Churchill Road Elementary School gym.

The 2017 Congressional Art Competition 
for Virginia's 10th Congressional District is
accepting submissions
. The competition is open to all high school students who reside in the District.
The
Best in Show winner
of the competition will have their piece of
art displayed in the United States Capitol
. Students should drop off their completed artwork on
April 17 between 2 and 5 pm
at Enterprise Hall on the George Washington University Virginia Science & Technology Campus. Art submitted must be ready to hang and entries are limited to two per student.

come learn about college admissions trends

Please join us for the next Principal's Coffee/PTSA meeting, on Wed, April 26, 9 am, at Cooper MS. Our featured speaker is Langley College and Career Counselor Hannah Wolff, who will present "Trends in College Admissions." Ms. Wolff will analyze college acceptance data from the last several years, both at Langley and nationally, to give parents an idea of the trends that have emerged. Ms. Wolff will be joined by Principal Amico, who will provide school updates and answer parent questions.

The 32nd annual
Northern Virginia Regional College Fair (NVRCF)
is fast approaching. More than 180 colleges, institutions and community organizations have registered to attend NVRCF, making it one of the largest fairs in Northern Virginia.
It's a great opportunity to get your students motivated and excited about their post-secondary plans, while equipping them with the tools and information necessary
to successfully navigate the college search and application process.
The college fair will be held on George Mason University's Fairfax Campus on Wed, March 29, 6:30-8:30 pm in EagleBank Arena (formerly the Patriot Center).
Students and parents are not required to register prior to the fair. Doors will not be open before 6:30 pm, so please encourage your students to arrive no earlier than 6:15 pm to minimize wait time. Parking is available, free of charge, in Parking Lots A and L, directly across from the Patriot Center. To view a campus map, click here.

Dates have been announced for LHS summer sports camps. These sessions often fill up, so
sign up as soon as you can to get a spot.
  Boys' Basketball Camp - July 10-14 and July 17-21, Cooper MS. Ages 7-15. Scott Newman, LHS Boys' Head Coach, and the LHS Basketball coaching staff oversee all aspects of the camp.
Girls' Volleyball Camp - June 26-30, Cooper MS. Ages 8-14, no previous experience required. Sue Shifflett, LHS Girls' Head Coach, and the LHS Volleyball coaching staff will run camp.
