Important Reminders

* The September 15 paycheck is the first payroll for all employees in this current contract year. Be sure to check your pay stub in Skyward to make sure deductions are correct. If you have questions, call Karen Yeager at 341-2228 or Erica Markley at 341-2428 in the Payroll Office.

* Open enrollment has started if you want optional group life insurance through KPERS and continues through September 30. This offers you additional coverage beyond KPERS basic life insurance. If you are happy with your current coverage, you don't need to do anything. You can view available coverage by logging into your KPERS account, where you can see how much you have now and how much you can get during open enrollment. You can also adjust the amounts while online to estimate your new premium and you can determine how much coverage you will need. Click here to apply and then click the "Member Login" button to access your account or "New User" if you have never used your account. Click here for additional information. Call 844-289-2306 or email kpersadmin@sstandard.com with questions.

* The EMPAC employee portal is now available. EMPAC is an employee benefit that provides health and wellness consultations, counseling, money management, legal assistance and more to staff at no charge. Click here for the website. The member login is EPS.

Moments

Reaching Young Learners

* Mobilizing Literacy 4 Lyon County Families has two activities planned this week. A Bilingual Storytime is set for 6:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Emporia Public Library. The focus will be on patriotic Central and South American Independence Day and snacks will be provided. Also, a Friday Family Fun Day will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Lyon County History Center, with a read-aloud, music, movement and other activities to bring parents and children together.

Educator Spotlight
The Emporia Gazette recently featured the connections linking Logan Avenue teacher Jeannie Jenkins, Food Service Director Denise Kater and Kater's daughter, Kylie, now a second grade teacher at Logan Avenue.

Football Tailgate
Before the Spartan football team's home opener Friday night, the EHS Football Booster Club will have a BBQ tailgate at the ESU parking lot by the Milton Tennis Courts from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A suggested donation of $5 gets you a hamburger or hot dog, chips, bottled water and a Hostess treat. Face painting and performances from the EHS cheer and dance squads and band are also scheduled. Proceeds raise money for chartered bus rentals and team meals.

Board Business

The Board of Education received a report on the Kindergarten Jump Start held July 24-28 at Riverside Elementary. The week of activities gave students a chance to get acclimated to the school environment before the year started. Two sessions were offered with breakfast and lunch provided. The program was funded by the Mobilizing Literacy grant.

Also, the board:
  • Approved fiscal payments.
  • Let bids for paper supplies for the 2017-18 school year.
  • Approved a donation of $3,335 from the Walnut PTO to Walnut Elementary for new music risers, an Elmo and personal dictionaries for second graders.
  • Approved a memorandum of agreement between Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative and Southeast Kansas Education Service Center for Medicaid billing for infant/toddler services.
In Addition

* All employees should have received information about the 2017 United Way of the Flint Hills campaign. Please return pledge forms to your building or department United Way chair by September 20.
