Note from Executive Director

September is a big month for United Ways. For United Way of Muscatine, it's also a month of kickoff and beginnings. If you have been reading our newsletter, you've probably gotten familiar with Donovan. Donovan had the opportunity to get back into the classroom with a teaching position, so he is doing just that in the Davenport school district working with at-risk students. We appreciate all that he did in the year that he was here. Donovan's departure gave us the opportunity to welcome back Michele Rhoades to United Way. In the past, Michele has worked with United Way and a couple of other non-profits in town. She was working outside the community for a few months before coming back to take over our Resource Development spot. We're excited to have her rejoin the team and I'm sure you'll learn more about her in the coming months. Speaking of beginnings, next Wednesday, September 20th, will be our big day. That marks our annual Day of Caring as well as the kickoff to our campaign. It's a perfect reminder of all of the work that we're doing to make this community a great place. We get to mark the start of our fundraising campaign while also getting hundreds of volunteers working on projects throughout the community. Please join us at the Pearl City Station at 7:30 for the kickoff. Friday, September 22nd is Live United Day. We encourage everyone to wear their Live United shirts that day. If you need a shirt, give our office a call and order yours for just $10. And if you are ever interested in learning more about what we're doing in the community, we'd be happy to meet with you or your group.

Thank you for reading.

Partner Program: Sunset Park Education Center

Mission
In coordination with local schools, the Sunset Park Education Programs will create supportive and healthy afterschool and summer enrichment activities aimed at enhancing academic success of school aged residents of Sunset Park. The program's objectives are to provide support and resources to assist students' efforts at completing required school assignments and improving the skill sets necessary for achieving academic success. The program also strives to support Sunset Park families in their efforts toward ensuring their children's academic success with the goal of finishing high school. This will prepare them for future opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Overview
Since its beginning in spring 2011, the Sunset Park Afterschool Program has demonstrated its effectiveness in helping students achieve academic proficiency, building trusting relationships with Sunset Park families and furthering the Housing Agency's mission to provide opportunities for upward mobility. By offering quality afterschool instruction and homework help, the Afterschool Program eliminates many barriers to academic achievement that students face. Students come to the Afterschool Program when they are dropped off by the school bus at the end of the school day. Two caring staff members assist the students and encourage them in their academic pursuits. The program coordinator maintains communication with the students' teachers regarding their school performance. Since the program is located at Sunset Park, the students walk home at the end of the program without concerns for security or traffic safety. Because the program is on-site, parents have access to the program and staff, enabling them to easily address concerns, volunteer at the center, and attend special family events.

In addition to the Afterschool Program during the school year, the Sunset Park Education Program includes a Summer Enrichment Program which provides a free healthy lunch though a partnership with the United Way summer lunch program. Activities are provided to the students to enrich their summer experience, maintain their academic level, and give them a better understanding of their community. The students take part in the Musser Library's Summer Reading Program, take field trips to interesting places in the community, have guest speakers, and swim. Some of the places the students visited last summer were the Y, the Muscatine Art Center, Aquatic Center, Public Safety Center, City Hall, Discovery Park and Riverside Park. Participants in the summer program also maintained a community garden. Staff used the garden vegetables in recipes for the children to try.

Trinity Muscatine Public Health Spotlight - 1st Five Program at Trinity Muscatine Public Health

The 1st Five Program is a Healthy Mental Development Initiative through the Iowa Department of Public Health. Locally, the program is based out of Trinity Muscatine Public Health and provides services to families in Muscatine, Louisa and Cedar Counties.

1st Five builds a support system between families, medical practices, local child health centers, and a variety of community based organizations by connecting families to the services they need.

The 1st Five Program has two main requirements. A referral must come from a primary care provider and there must be a child five or younger in the home. 1st Five can then work with the family regardless of income and can provide services to the entire family.

1st Five works closely with primary care providers and medical clinics to provide them with education and training regarding the importance of early childhood developmental screenings for children five and under and incorporating these screenings into their well child check-ups.

While 15-18% of school-aged children have a developmental or behavioral disability, less than half are identified before starting school. If not identified early, these children are at risk for school failure. Ask your child's primary care provider for a developmental or behavioral screen, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) or Ages and Stages Social Emotional Questionnaire (ASQ: SE).

Trinity Muscatine Public Health also offers free developmental and behavioral screenings (ASQ-3 and ASQ: SE). If you are concerned about whether your child is developing on track, you can call 563-263-0122 to request a screening.

Imagination Library Spotlight - Finley Family

1. How did you hear about Imagination Library? Muscatine MOPS

2. What book are you reading right now?  Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa
.
3. What do you/ your child like about the book?  The kids love to go to their grandparents house to spend the night and they usually take something special with them. The kids like how in this book even though little llama forgets his "fuzzy" in the car, his grandparents find something special he can hold on to while he is at their house.

4. What is your favorite book that you have received through Imagination Library? And why?  "If I built a Car" .... this is a favorite because it rhymes and also because the imagination of this character as he builds his pretend car is amazing! The kids enjoy adding in any additional ideas they have for their own imaginary car.

5. What do you like most about reading with your child/children?  They love to snuggle up and sit on my lap... I have 4 kids so whoever picks the book gets a turn to sit on my lap and then they switch.

6. Would you recommend Imagination Library? If so, why?  I would highly recommend this program to anyone... in fact I have helped set up a few people that didn't know about it. I would recommend it because the books have such good content and also are nice quality. It makes the kids feel very special when they have a book waiting in the mailbox!

7. How has Imagination Library helped grow your home library?  By each child receiving a book once a month it has helped to bring new stories into our home. They still have some of their favorites but we now have a nice variety!

8. Anything else you would like to share? Like I said the kids love opening the mailbox to find a book.... whoever gets the mail will run in yelling "someone got a new book!!" They then all gather around to see who got the book and then wait to look at it together. Very special memories!!!

Thank you to the Finley family for sharing.  For more information about Imagination Library, or to share your story, please contact  Lori Dietrich a  [email protected] .

Harper's Cycling and Melon City Bike Club Work Together to Help Child

This boy's bike was his only mode of transportation to school. His bike was not in good shape and United Way of Muscatine took it to Harper's Cycling and Fitness to see what they could do to help.  Harper's gave the bike a tune up and replaced the peddle that was broken.  Melon City Bike Club gave the child a helmet to wear while riding his bike.  Neither Harper's or Melon City Bike Club charged United Way's Kids First Program for the repairs or helmet for this child that had a barrier of just getting to school every day.   Thank you for working together and supporting our children in the community!
Sweatin' for School Supplies

Thank you to Pierce Furniture, Toyota of Muscatine, The Voice of Muscatine, Vintage Sound, and KWPC for coming together last month to collect school supplies for United Way and the Muscatine Community. We appreciate all the support!
