Baccalaureate will be held on Sun, June 19 from 4-5:30 pm at the new Langley Auditorium. We need your contributions to make this a beautiful ceremony honoring all our seniors since we receive no school funding.

Langley hallways are abuzz with anticipation and excitement this month. Sure, there are still SOLs and finals to tackle. But the
promise of summer is just around the corner. And (apart from year-end testing) fun abounds:
Prom was a blast. Student Government hosted a
carnival in the courtyard with
karaoke, a dunk tank, and rides. Many seniors are spending the next few weeks on
Langley Leap, LHS's mini-internship program.
Chorus, orchestra, and band concerts are coming up. Seniors are looking forward to a trip to
Hershey Park, Baccalaureate, All Night Grad Party, and Commencement. And everyone is ready for a break!
Before we drift into the slower, rose-smelling days of summer, the PTSA is busy preparing for the next school year. Thanks to the hard work and arm-twisting talents of our Nominating Committee, co-chaired by Lisa Givens and Lauri Dacey, at last week's final PTSA meeting we elected a fantastic slate of PTSA officers for the 2016-2017 school year:

science olympiad team at nationals

Langley's National Science Olympiad team all dressed up for the awards ceremony at the University of Wisconsin. LHS placed 7th overall in "Electric Vehicle", and 10th in both "Bridge Building" and "Air Trajectory competitions. Congratulations to the team and a big thank you to the sponsor, Science Department Chair, Leah Puhlick!

This season, the Langley Scholastic Bowl won its 3rd straight Virginia 6A State Championship. Here they are during a visit to the US Capitol, where Rep. Barbara Comstock honored the team with certificates and a tour of the Capitol.

Math teacher Ilana Hand has been a part of the Langley community for 22 years. Ms. Hand graduated from
Union College in New York with a degree in theoretical math. She took a job at boarding school for a year and planned to go back to school soon after, although she ended up staying there for four years. She then came to the Northern Virginia area
to earn a master's degree and began teaching at Langley.
During her time at Langley, Ms. Hand has taught many courses including Algebra One, Geometry (regular and honors), Algebra Two (regular and honors), and Pre-Calculus (regular and honors). She does not have one particular subject she likes the best; rather, it depends on the group of kids.
"
I would much rather teach a motivated group of students who struggle, rather than a group of kids who just get it naturally," said Ms. Hand. She loves the Langley community and believes the students and teachers make the difference.
"
And the camaraderie among our community is what keeps me here. My department, our faculty, our community, hands down," said Ms. Hand.
When discussing her teaching philosophy, Ms. Hand said,
"
I believe education in this country is about teaching young people how to think in multiple ways. I don't think the most important thing in the world is how to factor a polynomial, I think the most important thing in the world is to be able to take a problem you have never seen before, and try to figure it out with your brain." In her free time, Ms. Hand enjoys tennis and live music.

To close out the Langley Read theme for this year, that everyone has a story, students had the opportunity to hear from David Egan, an ambassador and athlete for Special Olympics.
David always
dreamed big. When he was a youngster, starting out as a
Special Olympics swimmer, he dreamed of winning his races. As he grew, he looked to bigger goals, such as having a job and finding ways to
change attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities. Now as an adult, David has been living his dream and inspiring others to live theirs. Among other things, he's grown up to be a sought-after spokesman for people with intellectual disabilities, speaking at international conferences, testifying at a U.S. Senate hearing, and addressing a global audience at the United Nations this year.
For David, who has Down syndrome, his many achievements haven't come easily. That's where determination comes in, to keep pushing even when things seem hard. David says he learned that as a young athlete.
"
Special Olympics taught me to succeed, to set a goal and do my best," says David.
"
It changed my life."

Last week, the McLean Chamber of Commerce  hosted their Annual Education Awards program, which recognizes outstanding Langley and McLean High School staff and students. Langley award recipients were Bob Foley, physics teacher, for Teacher of the Year; Dave Poach, Student Resource Officer & Fairfax County Police Officer, for FCPS Employee of the Year; and Kitty Ascrizzi for Student of the Year. Kitty will be studying engineering at the University of Michigan next fall. The Langley & McLean PTSAs were also recognized for their contributions to each school and the support they provide to teachers and students.

soccer:
Varsity boys' soccer suffered a tough loss at the hands of
Washington-Lee HS in the regional tournament.
They had a great season and have a lot to be proud of. Many kids and teachers came out to support the team.
crew: The Langley Crew team
had a successful season racing in local, regional and national regattas. At the
Virginia State Championships, the team took home
one Gold (Men's Junior 8) and
four Silver medals (Men's First 4, Women's Lightweight 4, Men's Second 4 and Women's Novice 8). Unfortunately due to weather conditions and cancellations, not all boats had the opportunity to race in their finals.
While racing at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta -- the largest high school regatta in the world -- the Langley team sent three boats into the semi-finals at this prestigious event: Women's Junior 8, Men's Senior 4, and Men's Junior 8, while the Women's Lightweight 4 narrowly missed advancing to semis. The Men's
Junior
8 delivered a photo finish in the semi-final which sent them to the Finals, where they took 6th place from among 53
competitors.
Wrapping up the season at Scholastic Rowing Association Nationals Regatta, Langley boats raced tough competition from the top scholastic teams in the country, where the boats earned the following results: Women's Lightweight 4 narrowly missed advancing to semi-finals; Women's Junior 8 - 9th fastest time; Men's First 4 - 11th place; Men's Junior Eight - 5th place @ SRAA Nationals!

baseball: Congratulations go out to the varsity baseball All-Conference players.
Varsity finished in fourth place and JV finished with a record of 12-2.
 lhs student honored: Fairfax County has a
Women in Sports Awards Ceremony every year. This season
Halle Duenkel won the
Donna de Varona Spirit of School Award. This award is given to a senior who manifests a never-give-up attitude, is a leader on and off the field, and displays behavior that is consistent with the ideals of ethical conduct in athletics.

Fri, June 17, Tues, June 21 and Wed, June 22 are all half-days. The last day of school is Thurs, June 23. No exams are scheduled, and it is a half day. There is not an academic or attendance requirement for your child to attend school on June 23.
