Parent volunteers are needed now more than ever. Junior parents are responsible for the senior breakfast (June 17, with set up on June 16), and the ANGP cleanup (early morning of June 21). Please help make these events a success!

I always think of Memorial Day as one of the true markers of the end of the school year. While we're not quite done yet, we're
almost finished with 2015-16. This year has brought
many changes, most of which were very positive, some of which were sad.
Through all of these changes, the one constant has been
the incredible amount of spirit and pride from our staff and community. Through the good times and bad
our students have been incredible. They do their work, are pleasant, and have a good perspective. They are
wonderful ambassadors for our school and community. Their accomplishments are too many to mention
. Many students have accomplished things that are under the radar.
They have overcome obstacles and troubles that other people will never understand.
I'm so proud of every one of our students. If you had the opportunity to walk our halls every day, you would see how great they really are.
In education we like to measure everything. We like to be able to quantify everything, but some things we just can't. Many of the great things about our students and teachers cannot be quantified, but we know
they are superlative. As we move into summer,
remember how proud you are of your students and all that they've accomplished. Remember to
thank their teachers and congratulate all on
a job well done.

The Spring Academic Awards program was held Thurs, June 9 at 7 pm in the Langley Auditorium. This is the time of year when each department recognizes students for various achievements in their class. Pa
rents were mailed invitations earlier in May so they could mark their c
alendars and watch their students receive their awards. The stud
ents aren't told what award they'll get before the program, so it's fun to see their surp
rise. Light refreshments are supplied by the PTSA before the program. With over 250 awards presented, it truly is a special evening.

Austin Whitehorne is a teacher of
Economics and Personal Finance, and
Info-Systems. He's also the
head coach of the boys freshman basketball team and
assistant coach of boys' varsity tennis.
This has been
his third year teaching at Langley. His previous teaching experience involved student teaching at
Herndon HS. When asked about the students here, Mr. Whitehorne claims, "
Love them. My students, and especially my players, always
bring a smile to my face." His player-coach relationships are very strong, and the chemistry has helped post some impressive results. "
Basketball is something that I am very passionate about," he says, "and the opportunity to coach and share my wisdom about the game is one of the greatest joys in my life." Outside his professional and coaching life, Mr. Whitehorne
loves being in the outdoors and occasionally partakes in a
Netflix binge.
When asked about his favorite part of Langley, he says, "The students, the faculty, and the parents. I have always felt tremendous support from the Saxon Strong Community." Lastly, every teacher brings different strengths to the table. When asked what makes him unique, he states, "My age and personality. I consider myself a pretty down-to-Earth dude and feel I do an excellent job of relating to my students."

one more chance for service learning
|
Back by popular demand . . . the last opportunity to earn service hours at Saxon Time this year is
Mon, June 13. All opportunities (except beads) will be set up in the new space,
Langley Hall, outside the Auditorium.
Students can offer service by:
- making sandwiches/lunches for Martha's Table
- creating blankets for Martha's Table
- folding origami for Cranes for Cancer
- writing military notes
- ironing pillow cases for Case for Smiles
- making beads for Village of Hope School (this opportunity will be offered in Ms. Stark's art room, #118)
Even if your student doesn't need service hours, this is a great way to relax and unwind from academics!

Thank you for taking a few minutes at the beginning of the year
to link your cards to LHS -- we raised
over $25,000 this fiscal year! It really does make a difference. These additional funds will have a huge impact on our ability
to purchase needed items associated with renovations.
- Giant: Donated over $14,000. Giant Customer Service Manager Chris Jackson presented Principal Amico, Terri Markwart, and Chrissie Lavin with a " Giant check" at the final PTSA Meeting.
- Safeway: Donated over $5,000.
- Harris Teeter: McLean Store Manager Jennifer Munoz will be presenting a check for over $4,000 to LHS on June 21.
- Amazon: Projected donation ~$2,000. We earn from Amazon purchases year-round. Please start all sessions on the PTSA home page and click to Amazon from there. Every click makes a difference!
- Target: Projected donation ~$1,000. Their program has ended but we thank those who participated for the past several years.

The PTSA, through the love and dedication of LHS parent Ally Weingast, created a Memory Book and Garden for Mr. Stone's family. Rocks with student dedications were added to a succulent garden, and all the tributes and memories left by current students, former students, and faculty were included in a beautiful Memory Book. Please assure your child that if he or she sent a photo, wrote a message at school, or emailed one to the PTSA, it was included in the book. The Book and Garden are a wonderful tribute to a unique teacher and a truly special gift for his family.
