Common Myths:

Myth: One glass of wine is not enough for the developing baby to even be exposed to the alcohol.

Any alcohol consumed by a pregnant woman is passed to the developing baby, even if it's a small amount. There is no threshold of prenatal alcohol consumption below which the baby is not exposed.

Fort Bend County Residents Can Choose Between Three Disaster
Recovery Centers
September 10, 2017

FORT BEND COUNTY, TEXAS -  Fort Bend County residents from all over the county have three easy options for visiting with government officials about their flood assistance process. A third Disaster Recovery Center opened today at the Katy Mills Mall, in addition to one in the Sienna Annex and one at the Simonton Community Church.

Disaster recovery centers offer in-person support to individuals and businesses in 39 counties included in the Texas federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent floods.

Recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the State and other agencies will be at the centers to talk about assistance and to help anyone who needs guidance in filing an application. The Fort Bend County Disaster Recovery Centers are listed below:

Name
Address
Days
Hours
5855 Sienna Springs Way, Missouri City, TX 77459
Monday - Sunday

The U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) disaster assistance employees are committed to helping businesses and residents rebuild as quickly as possible. SBA representatives are available to answer questions about SBA's disaster loan program and help business owners and residents apply to SBA.

Disaster Recovery Centers are accessible to people with disabilities. Centers have assistive technology equipment allowing disaster survivors to use amplified telephones, phones that display text, amplified listening devices for people with hearing loss, and magnifiers for people with vision loss. Video Remote Interpreting is available and in-person sign language is available by request. The centers also have accessible parking, ramps and restrooms.

If possible, homeowners, renters and businesses should register with FEMA before visiting a recovery center. Eligible residents may register for assistance the following ways:
  • Online at DisasterAssistance.gov.
  • Phone 800-621-3362 (voice, 711/VRS-Video Relay Service) (TTY: 800-462-7585). Multilingual operators are available (press 2 for Spanish).
  • Via the FEMA app, available for Apple and Android mobile devices. To download visit: fema.gov/mobile-app
The following information is helpful when registering:
  • Address of the location where the damage occurred (pre-disaster address).
  • Current mailing address.
  • Current telephone number.
  • Insurance information.
  • Total household annual income.
  • Routing and account number for checking or savings account (this allows FEMA to directly transfer disaster assistance funds into a bank account).
  • A description of disaster-caused damage and losses.
Disaster survivors can visit any of the centers for assistance. Locations of other recovery centers are online at www.fema.gov/DRC.

TCDD Seeks Council Members

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) is looking for people with developmental disabilities (DD) or family members of people with DD to serve on the Council. This is a great opportunity for you to share your experience and make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities in Texas.

What is TCDD?
TCDD was created through the DD Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act) and is one of 56 DD Councils in the United States. Our mission is to create change so that all people with disabilities are fully included in their communities and exercise control over their own lives. To achieve our mission, we invest in innovative projects and engage in advocacy work.

What is a Council Member?
The Council is composed of 27 members and at least 60% of the members are people with DD or family members. The remaining 40% of members include representatives from state agencies that provide DD services and our DD Network Partners. We strive to have a Council that reflects the geographic, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the state of Texas. Council members serve six-year terms and are appointed by the Governor.

What Do Council Members Do?
During quarterly Council Meetings, Council members share their experiences, discuss ways to make life better for people with DD, and make decisions about the work that we do. You are an expert in your own life and you know what works and doesn't work for people with disabilities in your community. By sharing what you know, you can help shape our projects and advocacy work so we can continue to improve the lives of people with disabilities in Texas.

What is a Council Meeting?
Every three months, Council members from around the state come together for a meeting. The two-day meetings, which take place in Austin, are held in February, May, August, and November. During the meetings, Council members have an opportunity to:
  • participate in small group discussions about issues,
  • receive briefings about policy issues,
  • talk about new ways to improve the system,
  • attend presentations from TCDD grantees,
  • develop advocacy skills, and
  • network with other members, presenters, and experts.

Logistics and Reimbursements

TCDD staff arrange meals, travel, and lodging for Council members. While Council members serve without a salary, they can be reimbursed for actual expenses for approved activities. Examples of covered expenses include meals, lodging, and travel for the Council members and attendant; and, if applicable, respite care and other direct expenses.
