Our Class Dinner for both students and parents will be Wed, Nov 9, 6 pm. Dinner will be followed by a presentation by Todd Rinehart, Admission Director, University of Denver, on "College 101: Finding the Match-It's About Graduation, Not Admission!" Dinner tickets are $20 per person ($25 at the door). To order tickets send in the

to the main office. If you've already sent in dues but didn't buy tickets, just fill out the form for the dinner ticket portion only.

Are you a PTSA member? If so, there are a lot of
grateful Langley teachers who, on behalf of their students, would like to give you
thanks ... or a high five ... maybe a hug! That's because on Friday the PTSA Executive Committee
granted the following requests -- all geared toward improving students' learning experience --

Professional Development:
Seven teachers received a total of $2,700 in funding for courses designed to enrich teaching expertise in the following departments: English, Social Studies, CTE, Math, Special Ed, Foreign Language, and Student Services
A big thank you to Laura Skeen, Appropriations Chair, and to Liz Holzapfel, chair of the Professional Development Fund, and to the members of our Executive Committee. Both Laura and Liz say many more requests are coming down the pipeline to which we'd love to say "YES!" To do so, we need your support. Q: My child is struggling in his honors class. Is it possible to switch him into a non-honors class without the change showing up on his transcript?
A: Yes, if the change can be made
before the first quarter ends on Nov 4. Students have five days after the date on which the report cards are sent home in which to
drop a course without having a grade recorded permanently on their transcript.
After Nov 21, either a WP (Withdraw Passing) or WF (withdraw failing) will be recorded on the transcript next to the dropped course. Keep in mind that switching out of a class can result in an
entirely new schedule for your child. Also numerous classes, even the standard level, are at capacity at this time.

Beginning this week, weekly academic progress report emails will be sent via SIS unless you change your SIS settings. Located in each SIS parent account is a tab titled My Account. Within this tab, parents have the option to choose which day of the week they wish to receive the progress report emails, opt out of the service entirely, or designate a threshold for notification (if a grade drops below a set value).

national teen driving safety week
|
 Representatives from AT&T, State Farm, and INOVA Fairfax talked with students during all lunches in cafeteria about the
dangers of distracted and unsafe driving. Students used simulators and played games provided by those companies to experience the consequences of distracted driving. Students were reminded that
distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes and attention from the road including
using your phone, changing the radio, eating, and talking to friends in the car. Additionally, as students left the school parking lot at dismissal,
all students properly wearing their seat belts received a coupon for a free Slurpee from
7-Eleven and a coupon for french fries from
Santini's New York Style Deli in McLean. Our thanks to Fairfax County Police - McLean District, 7-Eleven, and Santini's!

The orchestra will present
"The Sounds of Asia" on
Thur, Oct 27 at 7 pm in the new Langley auditorium. The Asian-themed evening will include
a potluck dinner, Asian dancers, artwork and a Haiku "rap" in Langley Hall at 6 pm to kick off the event. The concert will commence at 7 pm. Hope to see you there!

saxon service verification

We have sent out verification of service hours for the
first two Saxon Service events, but several of the student emails were difficult to decipher. If your student participated in a Saxon Service activity
on Sept 22 or Oct 13 and has NOT received an email verifying his/her service hours, send an email to
Betsy Shomaker at
shomaker.jb@verizon.net. The email needs to
include the student's name, date of service, and name of the activity.

Many thanks to the more than 75 parents and community members who volunteered to guide our seniors as they
wrestled with various ethical dilemmas at Ethics Day this Wednesday. We are incredibly grateful for the hard work of
Ethics Day co-chairs Kelly Wilson and
Peter Kurzenhauser, who made the event possible. A very special thanks to long-time
Ethics Day champion Beth Eames, whose guidance and know-how were essential. We're also extremely thankful for the tremendous support and enthusiasm of
LHS faculty advisor, Josh Henry. We also extend special thanks to newcomer
Laura Moore, Langley's Senior Class Assistant Principal, who
showed her Saxon Spirit by jumping right in to lend a helping hand. Ethics Day committee members also deserve a special shout out for their months of hard work behind the scenes:
Liz Holzapfel, Kim Wenk, Nancy Rau, Caran McKee, and
Amy Hunt. Our Saxons are lucky to have a community of caring adults like you!

McLean School in Potomac, MD is hosting the
Cecily Advocacy Workshop on
Nov 12, 8 am - 2:30 pm. Cecily is a
day-long symposium highlighting new research and best practices in fostering growth for K-12 students and provide practical strategies to help children be successful. This year's topic is

The students of Langley's Fashion Marketing, led by senior intern Sarah Van Houten, volunteered as interns for D.C. Fashion Week this past summer. The interns attended the Washington Menswear Show, the M.E.D.I.A Showcase, and the International Couture Collection. At these events, interns helped designers get ready for the show by transporting their collections, fitting models, and dressing and accessorizing the models before and during the show. Also, some interns stuffed the swag bags, checked in and seated guests, check press credentials, and escorted VIPs to the front row, getting a first-hand idea of what a big fashion show is all about!

Governor's School is an
enrichment program designed for students looking for a challenging summer experience. Programs are offered in the
Visual and Performing Arts, Humanities, Math/Science/Technology, Agriculture, Life Science/Medicine, and mentorships in
Engineering and
Life Sciences. These residential programs run from late June to late July.
The selection process is extremely competitive. Most students selected for the Academic programs rank in the top 10% of their class and have scored in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.

kudos for long-time langley teacher

Last March, Dr. Val Cuikerman, (aka Kapitan) took a group of his students to Russia on their annual home-stay exchange program. While in Russia, Dr. Cuikerman was asked to be a key-note speaker at the regional Conference of Foreign Language Teachers in St. Petersburg. It was the first time in the history of the Conference that a foreigner was invited to be the main speaker.
Kudos to Dr. Cuikerman and the Russian students from Langley!
