Hurricane Relief Funds

If you are looking for a way to help the communities affected by the recent hurricanes, consider making a donation to one of several community foundations. Click on any of the red links below to donate, or visit the Florida Philanthropic Network's website for more ways to help.

The Community Foundation of Collier County (Naples, FL) created the Collier Comes Together Disaster Relief Fund to provide assistance to Hurricane Irma victims. 100% of donations collected are distributed to victims and their families.

The Miami Foundation

houses several funds to aide hurricane victims in Florida and the Caribbean. The Hurricane Relief Fund

supports recovery and rebuilding work driven by organizations on the ground. The Irma Caribbean Strong Relief Fund supports relief efforts in small Caribbean island nations and territories. The Irma Community Recovery Fund supports relief efforts for Florida's marginalized communities, ensuring residents in poverty have access to critical services and resources.

Southwest Florida Community Foundation established the SWFL Hurricane Relief Fund to support those affected by Hurricane Irma.

The Gulf Coast Disaster Relief Fund was created within the Gulf Coast Community Foundation to support relief and recovery for victims of Irma in that region.

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established within the Greater Houston Community Foundation to aide the victims of the recent floods in the Houston area.

The victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have a long road of recovery ahead of them and we thank you for your consideration of support.

#ILGive 2017

Too early to think about Thanksgiving?

Not if you are gearing up for #ILGive 2017!

This fall, Dunham Fund, Forefront and the Community Foundation are collaborating to provide free workshops for non-profits in our community to learn more about how they can successfully operate a giving campaign for Giving Tuesday through #ILGive 2017.

#ILGive is a campaign to engage Illinoisans in a day of giving to non-profit organizations in the communities in which we live. Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2017, reminds us to be thankful and support our local organizations that are giving to our community every day of the year.

The first workshop was held August 16 in Aurora at the North Island Center. Approximately thirty executive directors, developmental staff and board members from twenty-five different agencies took part in this training.

GiveGab is the platform used for the #ILGive campaign. Agencies learned specific strategies for creating effective taglines and telling their story using GiveGab. In 2016, Giving Tuesday raised $11,300,000 by Illinois nonprofits!

The Community Foundation provides grants to nonprofit agencies for capital purposes in the areas of education, social services, health care, and arts & humanities. Agencies wishing to apply for a grant must submit a letter of intent by September 30, 2017

Longtime Friend of Foundation Passed Away

Longtime supporter and friend of the Foundation William Alexander Greene passed away on August 14, 2017. His father, William B. Greene, was one of the founding members of the Community Foundation. Memorial contributions may be made to the William Alexander & Marjory Mather Greene Endowment Fund.

Barbara Kaufmann of Aurora recently passed away. She served on the Community Foundation's Board of Directors from 1977-1985. We extend our deepest condolences to Barbara's family.

CFFRV Partners With Local Winery

The Community Foundation is excited to announce its partnership with Aspen Lane Wine Company !

Based in Aurora, Illinois , the Aspen Lane Wine Company was founded by Bob and Sonya Evanosky as a way to combine their love of making wine with a business that would provide income to a select group of nonprofit organizations.

Drink wine. Do good! That's the motto of Aspen Lane. Each bottle or glass of wine purchased from Aspen Lane Wine Company generates a donation to a partner nonprofit. Aspen Lane Wine Com pany selects its partner charities based on their service to the community, and is focused on those groups whose mission is to serve and support children and adults with a variety of disabilities.

Bob and Sonya Evanosky have three sons; John and Christopher, who are identical twins, and Jack. All three boys were diagnosed with a fatal genetic disease known as metachromatic leukodystrophy. Sadly, i n December of 2016 John Evanosky passed away. Because of their experiences, the Evanoskys are supportive of charities that help disabled children and adults, as well as charities that fight chronic diseases. The Aspen Lane Wine Company provides a way for the Evanoskys to harness their passion for wine to make a positive impact on others through their nonprofit partners.

Aurora American Legion Band Fund

Band Commemorates 80th Season With New Fund

The Aurora American Legion Band Fund was created to commemorate the Band's 80th Anniversary Season in 2017. The Fund supports the operation and mission of the Band.

In 1937, a pair of World War I veterans from the Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 in Aurora, Illinois formed a Cadet Band comprised of high school musicians that was sponsored by the Post.

During World War II, the Band's activities were temporarily halted. After the war, the Band reformed in 1946 with veterans of both World Wars and later, veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, and more recent conflicts joined the ranks.

Today, just as it was 80 years ago, the Aurora American Legion Band is an organization that encourages student musicians to develop a lifelong love affair with music while providing veterans, those currently serving our country, and adult musicians the opportunity to continue playing and performing, wherever they are in their musical careers. The Band continues to be true to its patriotic roots, performing in parades, concerts, and other observances in and around the Fox Valley.

Getting To Know Your Foundation Staff

Meet Julie Christman!

Julie joined the Foundation in October 2015 as Director of Community Involvement and Partnerships. She is responsible for overseeing the Discretionary Grantmaking Program and assisting donors in completing advisory fund distributions. Before joining the Foundation, Julie worked for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy as their Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager. She has her Masters in Social Work and comes to the Foundation with various experiences. Julie was born in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Naperville in 2004 with her family. She has a husband and two children, a son, Zach, (age 15), a sophomore at Naperville Central High School, and a daughter, Abby (age 13), an eighth grader at Lincoln Junior High School.

Q&A with Julie Christman

What is your favorite season and why?

I love them all actually, but my favorite now is summer because with the kids off school we can do more together as a family and our weekly routines are more relaxed. It gives us a chance to visit family out of state and catch up a bit.

What is your favorite condiment?

Depends, but probably mustard.

What is your least favorite food?

Oysters or mussels.

What are your favorite sports to watch/play?

My son plays ice hockey, and over the years, I have really enjoyed watching him play, and have come to love the sport. I love how fast the game is and the skill required to play it. I played lots of sports growing up and ran cross country and track in high school. I still will play various games with the kids and when family get together, and I continue to run, all just for fun and to stay healthy.

What was your high school mascot?

I went to an all-girls Catholic high school in St. Louis. We were the Rosati Kain Cougars.

What radio stations do you listen to the most in the car?

Mostly news. It gives me a chance to catch up on things during my 45 minute commute. I also use the time to catch up on phone calls to family members.

What is a skill you'd like to learn?

I actually still have a lot I would like to learn how to do, and I truly believe we are never too old to learn new things! I would really love to be a better swimmer. I am a runner and can bike, but I'm not a very good swimmer. My goal is to complete a triathlon in a few years (notice I said complete and not compete!) Some of my other ones are: learn how to knit, play the piano, improve my Spanish speaking skills (at one point I was fluent).

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I am grateful for what I have been able to accomplish, and I know that I have never done it alone. One particular thing comes to mind. I ran a marathon when I was 40. It was only because I was healthy and had the support of friends and family that I was able to do it. My husband was on kid duty more often than normal for months and came to check on me several times during long runs to make sure I wasn't dehydrated. Friends ran a half marathon with me and encouraged me with my training. The day of the race in St. Louis, my brother saw me struggling half way through and ran the second half with me. I wouldn't have made it without him. So, while I'm "proud" of this accomplishment, I am also so grateful for those that helped make it happen.

If you could have any superpower, which would you choose and why?

Teleportation! I would love to get anywhere I want or need to be quickly. Living out of state from family makes it hard sometimes, especially if we want to get there fast, and it sure would be nice to just teleport home after work some days!
