November 2017

From Mr. Hickerson

Hello Maize South community. It's November and we are off to a great start to the 2 nd nine weeks. I think fall is finally in the air. I feel like our school has adjusted well to the increased enrollment of approximately 100 students from last year. I really appreciate our students and faculty.

Our girls' cross-country team won The Class 5A regional championship this season and our boys' team finished in 2 nd place at regionals. In addition the girls and boys teams also won league championships. Both JV girls' and boys' teams also won league titles. T he Maverick XC team competed at the 5A state meet in Lawrence October 28th. The girls' team finished in 4 th place and the boys' team finished in 6 th place. Great job athletes and coaches.

MSHS senior Hannah Shaver finished in 20 th place and London Love placed 28 th at the Class 5A state golf tournament in Emporia. Overall the team finished in 6 th place. The Mavericks were regional runners-up at the 5A regional in Great Bend.

MSHS hosted the 5A state tennis tournament on October 13th and 14th. The doubles team of Emma Queen and Kaylan Abendroth-Fields finished in 5th place. Good job ladies!

Congratulations to two of our students who were elected as State Business Professionals of America Officers. Kinsington Stucky was elected as State Historian and Vanessa Osorio was elected as State Parliamentarian. Amber McNew is our BPA sponsor.

The MSHS marching band competed in their final competition at the KBA event at Washburn University. The Mavs finished 2nd in prelims and in 8 th place overall to wrap-up the competition portion of the marching band season. This is the 2nd year in a row that the band  finished in the top 10 in the state. MSHS is the only band in the top 10 to have fewer than 100 students. The band has also been doing a great job of providing a festive atmosphere at our home football games this fall.

On October 14 th The Maize South High School Marching Band competed in the Shawnee Mission North Marching Invitational. The Invitational was a regional competition, featuring bands from Missouri and Kansas, with most bands more than twice the size of the Maize South.  The marching band received 3rd place in its division and 9th overall. Congratulations MSHS Marching Band!

The MSHS theatre department had two evenings of shows. The Mavericks performed on October 20 th  and 21 st  in the MSHS auditorium. The productions were under the direction of Wes Rice, MSHS theatre teacher. Thanks for all of your time and effort Mavs, excellent job!

On October 28th the MSHS vocal music department held their fall concert in the auditorium. The program was under the direction of Mr. Tyler Koepp. Great job Mavericks!

Congratulations  to the MSHS football team on the regional championship win over Wellington on Friday. With that win the Mavericks host McPherson this Friday at 7:00 pm in playoff action. Go Mavs!

The MSHS debate team won the Wellinton sweepstakes on Saturday. Great job Mavericks!

MSHS is starting a Clay Target Shooting team this fall under the leadership of MSHS science teacher Jed Heath. The team will compete in the Kansas High School Clay Target League. The first round of competition will be this spring.

Winter sport practices begin on Monday, November 13 th . Student athletes must have their physicals and all athletic packets on file with the athletic department before they can begin practicing.

Just a reminder that school will not be in session the week of November 20-24. USD 266 will be on fall break. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and safe travels.

The annual Snoball Dance is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 nd from 8:00-11:00pm in the MSHS commons. The dance is sponsored by the MSHS dance team.

Construction continues on the new Maize Career Academy located on the SW corner of Maize High School. The academy will be open to all high school students in USD 266. Classes are set to begin in the new facility when we return from winter break on January 4, 2018.

You can access www.avctl.org for athletic and activities schedules. Please feel free to contact MSHS with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to seeing you at a concert, athletic event, or activity that involves the Mavericks of Maize South HS.

Food Pantry Information
The pantry, located in the high school, will provide a limited selection of food and hygiene products to any Maize South High School student in need.  The pantry is supplied through and contingent upon student and community donations.  Non-perishable food items as well as new personal hygiene items are always accepted.  For a student to utilize the pantry, they need to talk with a counselor or an administrator; there is no vetting.  The whole process is discreet, with the goal of providing essentials without calling attention to the student.

Please feel free to share this information out so that all families in the building are aware of the opportunity.

Seniors
  • College applications and scholarships deadlines are approaching.  If you are still undecided, take time to schedule those final college visits.  It is advised that students apply for admission to at least three different colleges of interest.  Students can not apply for or accept any institutional scholarships (scholarships given by the college) until they are admitted to the school.  Many state colleges have a firm deadline of November 1st for institutional scholarships (ex: the Putnam or Fairchild at KSU or the Chancellor or Rock Chalk at KU).
  • Follow the MSHS counselors on Twitter @MavCounseling or utilize the Counselor's Corner website for the most up-to-date scholarship opportunities, planning tools, assessment sign-up, MCLS sign-up, important dates/deadlines, etc.
  • ACT information sheets with our school CEEB code and practice booklets are available in the counseling office on the south wall bookshelf.  ACT registration and payment is all done through www.actstudent.org.  Remember that Maize South High School is in Wichita when registering for a testing center.  Students can, however, take the test at any available site.
  • Need a transcript sent to a college?  The Maize school district uses the digital service www.parchment.com.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact the counseling office at 462.8003 or refer to our website, the Counselor's Corner, where you can find PDF instructions.

Juniors

  • Individual conferences with counselors will begin soon.  Juniors will review transcripts, Academic Portfolios (IPS and High School Resume), check graduation requirements, and discuss ACT testing.  Suggestions for senior coursework will be made.  Questions from students are highly encouraged.
  • Students should be diligent in updating their Individual Plans of Study (IPS) and working on their High School Resumes.  The IPS should be saved in the student's Google Drive.  If the student can't find their IPS, they can download a new one from the Counselor's Corner. After it's modified it in DocHub, it must be shared back with the alpha appropriate counselor.  A-L: Melichar | M-Z: Close

Maize South Math Club

The Maize South High Math Club ventured north and east on Wednesday, October 25 to compete in the Donald L. Bruyr Mathematics Day hosted by Emporia State University.

Seven students -- senior Brodie Gullic, Tatyanna Pokorski and Cale Thimmesch, junior Corey McDowell, sophomores Keaton Donaghue and Jordan Tran, and freshman Joelle Frady -- put on their calculating caps versus a collection of nearly 450 other competitors from 84 schools across the state.

Official results were not available at press time, but the trio of Thimmesch, Pokorski and Frady scored 72 points in the Geometry team contest and unofficially placed in the top 8.

"I think they gave the most time to the easiest questions and the least time to the hardest ones," Thimmesch said afterward.

Those same three students also competed in the Geometry individual contest, and while final tallies were unavailable, Pokorski noted, "It was easy. I probably got a 92 (percent) on it."

The competition also included Algebra individual and team contests. Tran, Donaghue and McDowell comprised the MSHS team, while Gullic, McDowell and Donaghue tackled the individual tests.

"The second half (of the individual test) got harder," Donaghue observed. "I'd say I scored anywhere from 60% to 80%. I'm going to give myself a big range there."

Medals were awarded to the top five finishers of Divisions 1 (large schools) and 2 (smaller schools) in each of the individual contests. The top three teams in the Algebra, Geometry and Math Scramble events were also given medals. Results for this year's contests were to be made available online  within two weeks of the competition.

The Mavericks are enjoying another exciting season together.  The Mavericks are currently 9-1. We won the district championship and recently won the regional championship with our victory over Wellington. This Friday the Mavericks host McPherson at 7:00 pm. The team is working hard together each day together to improve and make this a fun and memorable season for the Senior players.  All of the boys would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the cheerleaders, dance team, and families who continually pack our bleachers and provide positive support and encouragement each  Friday  night.  It is a blessing to play in front of such a wonderful community of supporters each week.  Please continue to come down after the game to meet the players, coaches and families.  Go Mavs!
