From the Editor
I've noticed that architects in recent seminars I've given related to LEED and masonry are increasingly skeptical of LEED and requirements for green building. Certainly LEEDv4 introduced new complexities for designers to master. But high-performing, sustainable designs don't have to include LEED. Regardless of LEED requirements, many companies and manufacturers are adopting sustainable practices that yield multiple benefits. Check out GREEN BUSINESS NEWS below for several examples.

Report Sizes Up Sustainability of Rating Tools
ASCE LIBRARY
How effective are green building rating tools at evaluating the three pillars of sustainability? A paper in a recent edition of ASCE's Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice analyzes the effectiveness of eight international green rating tools in evaluating the environmental, economic, and social factors of sustainability in buildings. Review the results (purchase required) at the  ASCE Library.

Measure Sustainability by Harmonizing Reporting Tools
WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
Sustainability reporting tools lack standardization and their use is voluntary, leading to SRT practices that vary widely, says Renard Siew, a sustainability adviser to Sime Darby Berhad. "This makes it difficult to compare and benchmark the sustainability performance of companies," he writes in this article.
