Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. - Oscar
Wilde
Art is a key trait of civilization. It takes a special individual to understand the finer things and then to convey them to students. A Langley faculty member for over 16 years, Kimberly Compton accomplishes this.
Possessing a Fine Arts degree with a focus in painting from St. Louis University, Ms. Compton teaches a variety of art forms including ceramics. "Ceramics brings in students who might not typically be involved in making art," Ms. Compton stated. "Drawing skills aren't necessary and in fact many people who couldn
'
t draw a straight line find that they have a skillful touch when making three-dimensional work."
Ms. Compton is known for her flexible style that celebrates the application of art both as a possible career choice and as a pastime. "I would like my students to consider, as they get older, art as a form of recreation. It
'
s extremely difficult to earn a living as a potter. But I have had students who have said, 'Ms. Compton, the university I
'
m going to has ceramics class for liberal arts people, and I think I
'
m going to take that.' I have a lot of kids that do that, and that is a reason to do it, to have it as a creative outlet."

rodef shalom rabbi speaks to students
|
As part of the Langley Read speaker series, Langley students had the good fortune to hear Rabbi Laszlo Berkowits, Rabbi Emeritus at Temple Rodef Shalom, share his story of survival living in Nazi-controlled Europe during World War II.
Born in Hungary, Rabbi Berkowits was taken at age 16 and imprisoned in a concentration camp in Auschwitz and a German labor camp. After his release at age 18, he arrived in the U.S. to begin his rabbinical studies.
This powerful presentation was videotaped and will be posted along with the other Langley Read Speaker programs on the PTSA website once it available.

parents who host, lose the most
|
May is Parents Who Host, Lose the Most month in Fairfax County. The School Board, the Board of Supervisors, and the Unified Prevention Coalition are kicking off the 10th year of the public education campaign, which is a program of the Drug-Free Action Alliance. This group informs parents and others about legal ramifications and health and safety risks of serving alcohol to teens.
During the prom and graduation season, UPC leaders and its Youth Council will stress the "don't be a party to teenage drinking" message by encouraging parents and adults to support alcohol-free events and to report parties with underage drinking to police.
The PTSA Family Network has created a pamphlet on talking to your kids about drugs and alcohol that will be mailed out to all Langley families soon.
