Don't forget to purchase your ANGP tickets! Advance purchase tickets are $80. Tickets increase in price to $85 after March 1. Also, now is a great time to make a tax-deductible donation to ANGP to help defray the cost of games, prizes, food, decorations and mementos. For additional information, visit our ANGP page.

College in the fall? What can you do to help your child be a happy and well adjusted college student? Come to our next class coffee on Jan 7 to hear our speaker, Melissa Sporn, Ph.D, offer advice on how to prepare your child for college. She'll also provide info that you can share with your students to help them successfully adjust to college life. Dr. Sporn is a local psychologist whose patients include former Langley students who have left college after a year or a semester. The question we asked her to answer was, "What do you wish those parents had known before their kids went off to college?" She'll share that experience with Langley parents.

Coffee will be served at 9:20, and the program will begin at 9:30, at Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean. We're looking for a few volunteers to help with refreshments.  If you can help, sign up here.

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow . . .
FCPS has had a complicated relationship with Twitter, especially when weather is involved. Ryan McElveen became an overnight sensation in Dec 2014 when he let kids know via Twitter they wouldn't have school the next day, long before it was officially announced by FCPS. Then there was the unexpected morning rush hour snowstorm on Jan 6, 2015, when students made #CloseFCPS the top trending hashtag that day! Ironically, FCPS now advises that the fastest way to hear about a school delay or closing is, you guessed it, Twitter @FCPSnews . FCPS recently posted a quirky but informative cartoon explaining how weather-related decisions are made. Here are some fun facts:

- Fairfax County is 400 square miles.
- 130,000 students ride the bus each day, second only to the New York City school system.
- FCPS maintains the largest bus fleet in the country, even larger than Greyhound.
- Kids don't always attend their neighboring school, so it's not practical to close County schools by region. For example, Willow Springs ES hosts students from all over the County ranging from special needs to the Advanced Academic Program.
- Thousands of students either walk or drive themselves to school each day.

We know that even with all the advances in science, meteorology is not an exact science. FCPS consults with the National Weather Service, the VA Dept of Transportation and several other organizations when making a decision. FCPS attempts to make a decision the night before, but if there is uncertainty, Supt. Garza will make the announcement by approximately 4:30 am.

FCPS has released the proposed 2016-17 school year calendar. If FCPS has 5 or more snow days this year, the County has the option of requesting a waiver from the State to begin school  before Labor Day. The proposed pre-Labor Day start schedule has also been made
public, so depending on your feelings about a pre- or post-Labor  Day  start ... we should all sleep with  our pajamas inside out , a spoon under our pillows and flush ice cubes down the toilet (Please note: This has not been scientifically proven to make it snow, it's just what my kids tell me).

holiday shopping on amazon
As you are shopping for the holidays, please take 5 extra seconds and click through the PTSA website to make purchases on Amazon. LHS typically earns 6-8% of purchases made immediately after clicking into Amazon from the PTSA Website. If your family spends $1,000 in purchases for your home/family over the holidays, LHS would earn about $70 for LHS - just because you clicked first on the Amazon link on the PTSA Website and completed your purchase in that session

Please note that LHS does not receive credit for purchases made from shopping carts, gift registries, or direct access to Amazon.  If you have any questions or would like to know specifics to ensure large purchases generate revenue for LHS , please email lhs.ptsa.fundraising@gmail.com .
resolution
At last week's PTSA meetin g,  VA Del Kathleen  Murphy presented a resolution she introduced during the last General Assembly session recognizing  Langley's 50th  Anniversary to Principal Amico. School Board member  Janie Strauss and State Sen Barbara Favola (not  pictured) also  attended. While at the meeting, Del Murp hy and Sen Favola agreed to co-host a meeting with the Virginia Secretary of Education, Anne Holton, and Superintendent of Publi c Instruction, Dr. Steven Staples. The meeting will include other PTSA representatives from surrounding schools and districts to  discuss  funding for Northern Virginia and other ed ucation issues . We will keep the Langley community apprised of the date and time of this important event.

science fair needs volunteers
The science fair each year needs adult volunteers to support the students' hard work. To make it easier for everyone, this year we're using a Google form to organize all the volunteers (you can find the link here with more info on our needs). We are seeking  judges, food donations and hospitality helpers The science fair will be Wed, Jan 20, 3:15-7:30 pm. If you are able to volunteer, we would greatly appreciate it.

If you have any questions about judging, please contact Sarah Ell at slell@fcps.edu No experience is needed; if you have any type of science background we would love to have you as a judge! If you have questions about bringing treats for the judges' hospitality room, please contact Betsy Jones SEJones3@fcps.edu .

We wouldn't be able to make the science fair work without all of the parent volunteers. If you know of anyone in the community who might be interested to judge or help with hospitality, please feel free to forward them the link, or have them email Ms. Ell directly.
the gift of entertainment
The PTSA thanks the Satterfield family and Meg & Mark Gordon for donating tickets to the Washington Ballet's performance of the The Nutcracker. Two LHS teachers, math teacher Neil Holcomb with his wife, and humanities & CTE teacher Mike Horgan's wife and his son were able to attend last Thursday's performance at the Warner.  Mr. Horgan said, "They had a great time, and even though I didn't attend, it was really nice to be able to give them something that I otherwise couldn't have."

Do you have sports or theater tickets you won't be able to use, or maybe vouchers for a service (salon, dinner, weekend getaway)? If so, donate them to the PTSA  and we'll host a drawing so that one of our awesome Langley teachers can enjoy an unexpected treat!

a thank-you lunch
Pictured below is the PTSA lunch thanking our Academic Support Team of Mike Barrs, Pam Jelinek, Jan Dabroski, Deborah Whalen, Sandy HamiltonTherese Gauthier, Jessica Roche Margaret Scheirer, Pam Douglas, and Elizabeth Machado Rosario. These teachers donate their time to assist students who may need additional support and encouragement in order to succeed.  It is dedicated teachers like these who make our Langley community special.  Take time this holiday season to thank your child's teachers and let them know how much you appreciate their coming to school prepared to teach and inspire each day.
survey on technology
FCPS is participating in  Speak Up, a national online survey about the use of technology in schools. The info collected will help policy makers at all levels, as well as the business community, contribute to the national dialogue about science, technology, and preparing students for the 21st century workforce. The voluntary online survey is open to students, parents, educators, and the community through Dec 18. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

To take the survey, please click  here . Students will be asked for a secret word (password) when they take the survey; the secret word for our students is: fcps. Aggregate survey results for FCPS will be available in Feb 2015. Speak Up is an annual research project conducted by Project Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization that collects and reports the views of students in K-12, teachers, administrators and parents on 21st century education and technology. For more info about Project Tomorrow, visit tomorrow.org/speakup .
arts dept seeking space
The Langley Fine Arts Department seeks a local exhibition space for the month of May to showcase 30+ AP senior art portfolios. Students will showcase painting, photography, sculpture, and more, and we're hoping to find a donated space outside of the LHS construction zone that will accommodate some 150-200 works of art of varying sizes. Ideally the space would be near Langley and within our community, such as a storefront, small business, framing or art gallery, etc. We're open to suggestions! Our timing is limited to the month of May, for a weekend, a week, a month, we're flexible. Contact Amanda Archibald, Fine Arts Dept Chair, at aearchibald@fcps.edu with any leads.
