Partnering with Parents to Support Our Students

"We in DPS firmly believe -- and research shows -- that strong family and school partnerships mean better academic outcomes and brighter futures for all our kids."

Supt. Tom Boasberg

Dear Team DPS,
With the 2017-18 school year underway, and our kids
fully in the flow of the year, I'm excited to kick off one of my favorite opportunities of the school year: our Superintendent Parent Forums.
Created in 2010, these meetings offer
a great opportunity for me and other DPS leaders
to meet directly with parents and discuss how we can best work together to support our kids. We in DPS firmly believe -- and research shows -- that strong family and school partnerships mean better academic outcomes and brighter futures for all our kids. These forums are one of the many ways we continue to foster and build these vital relationships.
Last year, over 1,000 families representing 190 DPS schools attended our forums. During sessions,
we were able to have meaningful, open conversations with families, listen to their feedback and ask for their thoughts on key district initiatives.
This year, we are committed to deepening family and community partnerships, and our forums will reflect that, with a focus on:
- Strengthening direct, personal contact between families and educators.
- Supporting families in being their child's first educator and their advocate.
- Strengthening family and community voice in school and district decision making.
- Strengthening partnerships with the city, business leaders, nonprofit organizations and community groups.
Our first forum -- which will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the National Western Complex -- will focus on strengthening direct and personal contact between families and educators, including discussing the Parent Teacher Home Visit program, ensuring strong home-to-school communication channels, and sharing tools and strategies
that families can use to partner with their students' educators and to support their students' success.
As with every forum, we want to make it as convenient as possible for every member of our DPS community to participate, so interpretation, childcare and food and refreshments will be provided at no cost to all who attend.
I encourage you to share this opportunity with our families and encourage them to participate -- to share their voice and let us know how we can best support our kids. It will take all of us working together to reach our vision of Every Child Succeeds, and I'm excited to continue partnering with you to get there.
If you're interested in getting involved, talk to your school leader and learn more
here.
Best,
Tom

Update on East Investigation
|
|
|
We would like to provide you a brief update on the situation at East High School. As previously discussed,
DPS engaged
the firm of Davis Graham & Stubbs (DGS) to conduct an independent fact-finding investigation of recent events
involving the
cheer
team
at East High School. DPS continues to work closely with the Denver Police Department and District Attorney's office while they pursue their investigations into this matter. To date, law enforcement has not made any determinations regarding the conduct of the individuals involved. Once law enforcement completes their work, DGS will complete and release their independent report, and DPS will make any decisions pursuant to the information in the report. We will work to conclude this as quickly, fairly and transparently as possible, and will release publicly the DGS report. For more information, click here.

Freshmen at GWHS Participate in 9/11 Remembrance Event

As the nation remembers and honors the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, many schools are now filled with students who were born after the attacks happened, including freshmen at
George Washington High School. Educators at the school found a creative way to teach about the events of that day to these ninth-grade students, who are learning about Sept. 11 as a history lesson rather than a remembrance.
Through the project, educators aimed to not only teach the impact of Sept. 11, 2001, but to also get our kids thinking about a world larger than themselves and become involved in a service project that will extend throughout the school year.
