Students Run LA in the News!

Students Run LA is very excited about the return of the Olympics to Los Angeles in 2028! Due to the success of our program and our partnership with the LA84 Foundation, stories of SRLA's success have made it all the way to the news in Europe.

Kevin Figueroa, 16, a 12th grader at Venice High School has run five LA marathons himself with SLRA support and is passing the experience along to younger runners.

"My sister is 11 now, but when she was 9 she ran her first half-marathon, and it was me who trained her pretty much, and I never really was a good leader, but I trained her," Figueroa, who lives in the South Central district of Los Angles, told dpa.

Mike Smith, who has been an SRLA leader for 10 years at Venice High School, said every participant gets a pair of running shoes each year. The programme pays travel expenses and admission fees for races, including a 160-dollar entry fee for the LA Marathon.

"I see this as my second family. I really enjoy being with these guys," said 16-year-old South Central resident Janet Reyes.

Running together builds camaraderie, participants say.

"You run with someone else and that motivates you," said 17-year-old Roy Garcia of Los Angeles's Mar Vista neighbourhood.

9.13.17 Marathon Leader Meeting

On Wednesday, September 13, SRLA Leaders gathered together for the first Marathon Leader Meeting of the season. Many jokes were shared, but we got down to business learning everything we need to know to kickoff our season.  Special shoutout to SRLA Coordinator and Banning High School Marathon Leader Joe Mendoza for keeping the meeting on track!

Joe is one of the more recognizable members of Students Run LA, that is if you are flirting with the 15-16 minute pace out on the course. Joe, along with Eric Spears, serves as one of the infamous but ever so motivating "flagmen" near the back of the pack. In addition to that duty, Joe serves as one of the Coordinators for the overall SRLA program. During the upcoming season, Joe will be the point person moderating the bi-monthly Leader Meetings at the LA84 Foundation. And, finally, it must be noted that nearest to his heart are his hometown pride and joy, the Chicago Cubs! To learn more about Joe, check out this week's blog
