Please join us on March 16 for our Junior Class dinner and fundraiser. If you did not order tickets when you submitted your student's class form, please send in a check (payable to LHS) to the attention of the Class of 2018, Junior Class Dinner, Langley HS.
Tickets are $20 per person or $25 at the door.
We are collecting
photos of the Class of 2018 for our Senior Video. We need your help to ensure that all students and all aspects of life at Langley are presented (sports, performing arts, social, academic, etc.).

With the unseasonably warm weather and noticeable absence of snow, you might be wondering about
all of those unused snow days. Could they be used to end the school year early?
The Saxon spirit-crushing answer:
nope.
Why? Virginia law requires school districts to provide 180 days or 990 hours of classroom instruction each school year. The FCPS school year includes the minimum 180 days, but because the FCPS school day includes more hours than the state minimum, we exceed the 990 hour state requirement. In the event of snow days, FCPS is allowed to convert those extra hours into "days," allowing up to 13 snow day school cancellations while still meeting the required 180 days/990 hours of school.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work both ways. There is no means for days to be given back at the end of the year because those additional "days" are simply the excess time beyond 990 hours. If the days were given back, FCPS would fall short of the required 180 day school year. In addition, teacher contracts are tied to the number of school days per year.
We are in it for the long haul!

Please join us for the next Principal's Coffee/PTSA meeting, on Wed, April 26, 9 am, at Cooper MS. Our featured speaker is Langley College and Career Counselor Hannah Wolff, who will present "Trends in College Admissions." Ms. Wolff will analyze college acceptance data from the last several years, both at Langley and nationally, to give parents an idea of the trends that have emerged. Ms. Wolff will be joined by Principal Amico
, who will provide school updates and answer parent questions. Please note:
this event replaces the previously scheduled March 8 Principal's Coffee/PTSA meeting

girls basketball:
The girls varsity basketball team won the Northern Region tournament on Saturday for the
first time in school history!
Langley took down Battlefield in a come-from-behind-win. Ellie Buckley was named to the All-tournament team and Jordyn Callaghan was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The team will be back in action on Fri, Mar 3 where they will be playing Woodbridge HS at 7:15 pm at Lake Braddock
in the State Quarterfinals.
indoor track: Three members of the girls track team placed at the 6A State Indoor Track and Field Championships. Kayla Deehan was 4th in shot put, Kelsie Hao 7th in pole vault, and Jessica Keys 8th
in pole vault.
Additionally, Samantha Brascia was the only freshman to compete in either long jump (16th place) or triple jump (18th place). Two boys also competed and Jim Keys was 9th in boys pole vault and Daniel White
was 17th in long jump.

reflections competition update

Congratulations to junior Allison Kim for her winning visual arts entry to the national Reflections competition sponsored by FCPTSA/NPTSA.
Allison won for her work titled
"The Vision of Nature."
Allison received an
Outstanding Interpretation here at Langley and in the district level contest. Allison's piece will go on to the county competition for judging.

The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) invites the public to a conversation on Fairfax County and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2018 Advertised Budgets on Thurs, Mar 16, at 7:30 pm at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Avenue. Speakers include Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust, Joe Mondoro, Chief Financial Officer and Director of the Department of Management and Budget for Fairfax County, and Kristen Michael, Assistant Superintendent, Department of Financial Services for FCPS.

 Do you have books just sitting on shelves collecting dust that you have been meaning to donate but just haven't gotten around to it? Well, now is the time! Langley's chapter of the National English Honor Society is conducting a
book drive from March 1 to March 28.
We need your help to improve English education on both the local and international level. We are
collecting books in the K-8 reading level to be donated to both the Cunningham Park Elementary School -
Summer
Library, which encourages students to take home books over the summer
and continue to improve their skills,
and to a school in need in Vietnam.
There will be boxes placed around Langley labeled
'Book Drive' in which students can drop off their books. With your help, the Langley community could truly make an impact on these children'
s education.

Senator Mark R. Warner invites high school and middle school students, their parents, and guidance counselors to Academy Day 2017. Attendees will be provided a comprehensive overview of the United States service academies and their admission processes. In addition, students will be able to meet with officials from all five academies as well as representatives from ROTC programs, Virginia Tech, and the Virginia Military Institute. Representatives from Virginia Congressional offices will be available to answer questions regarding the application procedures for congressional nominations.

Fairfax County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways are invited to attend one of four upcoming teen job fairs in Fairfax County. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students. Free booth spaces are provided to local businesses. The first two job fairs will be held on March 18 at Chantilly High School and Oakton High School.
