September 14, 2017

Sunday, September 17, Pentecost 15. The liturgical color is  green.

The Episcopal Church in Utah turned 150 years old in August.  As we celebrate, we bring you a bit of history in each newsletter.

Cathedral Church of St. Mark

The Salt Lake Herald of June 9, 1871 reported that the bell at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark sounded for the first time and gave "forth some very sweet tones." It stated the bell weighed 800 pounds with another 340 pounds for the frame that secured it to the steeple. The original bell cracked in 1881 and the current bell you see in the photo was installed.

Southeast Region Celebrates 150th Anniversary

On Saturday, September 9th, seventy people gathered at the Episcopal Church of St. Francis, Moab, UT, to enjoy food, laughter, fellowship and stories at the first of the Regional Celebrations of the 150th year of the Episcopal Church in Utah. Guests enjoyed stories from members of the congregation and the Rt. Rev. Scott Hayashi. Bishop Hayashi also dedicated the new labyrinth at St. Francis with reflection and prayer.  The celebration continued on Sunday with the Bishop celebrating the Eucharist and preaching.

The regional celebrations coincide with the Bishop's annual visits to congregations around the diocese. Please see the 150th website at:   www.150yearsutah.org/events  to see where the next festivities will be held.
