Attendance Makes a Difference
As students head back to school this fall, the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District urges parents to set goals for attendance as well as achievement. According to Attendance Works, an initiative promoting attendance, absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Poor attendance can influence whether a child reads proficiently by the end of third grade. By 6th grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

State law requires every student between six and 18 years of age to be in school. A student may be excused for no more than ten (10) days in the school year. Parents/guardians can use the 24-hour school telephone phone number to report an absence for their child. The District works closely with students and families to provide support for school attendance. “Our Teachers build strong relationships with their students. If a child is absent from school, the classroom just doesn’t feel the same,” says Deidre Roemer, Director of Leadership and Learning, “We care deeply about the well-being of our kids.” Click here to read more.
