Parent Conference Day at Preschool

Please be on time for your meeting.  If something happens that you are late, call the office. Please make arrangements for care of your children.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
November is that time when retailers of decor and food and greeting card manufacturers remind us of giving thanks .  Even then we are never grateful enough.  In Chapel this month the children will give thanks to God for homes, clothing,
families, friends and school.
I also give thanks for the shining faces of our children as they walk in the door each morning.   Thank you for trusting us to share in their growth and development.
I am very grateful for parents who gave time and effort to hold the annual yard sale which benefits our Scholarship Fund.  I am in awe of the skill shown in putting on this sale so effectively.
I am also thankful for parents who came to learn the Conscious Discipline language we speak and the skills we are practicing to help your chldren grow emotionally and socially.  This is an amazing gift you can give your children.  Please continue to journey with us.

FALL FESTIVAL WAS GREAT!
Thanks to Parent Help
The Parents Group did a great job of arranging volunteers so that the event was a fun time for all. Volunteers came early in the morning and set up. They ran all the events and then did an amazing job of cleaning up.
YARD SALE
Parent  Support for Our Scholarship Fund
Final accounting after expenses shows yard sale proceeds at just about  $3900.  Your hard work in promoting, managing and follow-up after the sale were amazing. Thanks to Jessica Campbell, the chair and every parent who volunteered their time and brought goods to be sold.

LETER SENT HOME
Letters in bags on 10/30 & 31
Members of the United Christian Parish congregation have decided they are called to become a "Sanctuary church" if needed.  If you have questions, call the office or attend the information meeting on Sunday, November 12 at 6 pm.

FLU SHOTS
Has your child been vaccinated?
CDC, Center for Disease Control recommends that all children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday get a flu vaccine.  Make arrangements with your pediatrician today.  Also parents of young children are considered at high risk for flu, so check with your physician as well.
In addition to the flu shots, your next line of defense is always HANDWASHING.  Never skimp on the soap or the sudsing time!
I LOVE YOU RITUAL THIS MONTH

Had a friend he loved to greet
Shake child's hand
Treated her (him) with kind respect
Kindly touch the child's shoulder

Join us on November 28 or 30

How many times have you told your child to do something and find that they don't listen?  This scenario often doesn't end well.  Come learn some skills for effectively and respectfully giving direction to your little ones. Avoid power struggles that can get ugly.

Do some thinking about the most challenging parts of the day for you and your children.  Bring the list with you to the session, so that we can answer questions.  We are going to be making some visual routine cards in the workshop, so come prepared with your issues.

Many of your children have brought home a Shubert or Sophie Sleepover Bag.  If not, you will get it soon.  We will be getting more bags so that they can rotate more quickly.  We hope you have enjoyed reading the books with your child, and we hope you are curious about the skills that Shubert and Sophie are learning and that you will want to learn more.

The workshop sessions will be led by Conscious Discipline Certified Instructor Jane Plum.  Both sessions are the same; come on whichever day works best for you.  Sorry, no child care.  It's okay to bring quiet infants with you. Don't worry if you can't come to every session; each one begins with a review of the previous lesson. We welcome your participation in learning the language and skills that we use at school.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT SNOWS
Read Here and in Your Parent Handbook
  • If Fairfax County Public Schools are closed due to bad weather, the preschool will also be closed.
  • If Fairfax County Public Schools are to observe a late opening, preschool classes will begin 2 hours late and close 1 hour later than usual. Lunch Bunch will end at 2:15.
  • In the event of an early closing by Fairfax County Public Schools, Add-on Lunch Bunch will be canceled.
Listen to the news, look at Chanel 21, or check www.fcps.edu to see if Fairfax County Public Schools are changing their schedule.   Go to www.fcps.edu and sign up for News You Choose in order to receive e-mails or text messages about school closures and schedule changes.

Do's and Don'ts
  • Do keep this information handy. There may not be anyone in the Preschool office to answer the phone.
  • Do remember that this information is on the school website if you forget. See www.ucpreston.org.
  • Do sign up for News You Choose with FCPS.  That way you know when schools are closed or opening late.
  • Don't pay attention to what Fairfax County announces about preschool classes.  Those announcements refer to the preschools inside Fairfax County elementary schools, not our Preschool.

FAMILY COMPASS PARENT COFFEES
A Service to Our Parents
Family Compass is pleased to announce our Fall 2017 Parents' Coffee Series. Join us as our clinicians lead discussions around topics such as Building Social Skills, Neurofeedback & ADHD, Addressing Feeding Challenges, Supporting Communication in Young Children with Autism, and more!

Each session begins with a short (10-15 minute) introductory presentation by a clinician, followed by a conversation with parents and clinician(s). The goal of our series is to provide a forum for families to access our clinicians' expertise in an informal environment, while also allowing families to connect with one another to share their successes, struggles and acquired knowledge and wisdom.

The Parents' Coffee Series is provided at no charge. As the number of attendees we can accommodate for each session is limited, registration through Eventbrite is required. For more information and to register, please visit our website at  www.FamilyCompass.com.
