A message from your President...

Dear Colleagues;

I hope that everyone has gotten off to an excellent start and you are settled in and ready for a great year.
As we approach October, we have many exciting, relevant and current professional development events around the state. We kick off with our Lake Conference, October 15th and 16th. Please check the calendar for all upcoming events. Come and enjoy the wide array of events. You will be inspired.
This year our possibilities as an Association absolutely have "No Limits" - There are "No Limits" to what we can do for NJHPERD - what we can do for our communities -what we can do for our schools -what we can do for each and every student - and what we can do to help these students achieve success.
The only limits we truly have are those we place on ourselves - so, please, let your voices be heard and let your mantra, at least for the this year, be...there are "No Limits" to what we can do. Let's have a great year!

Sincerely,

Laurie A. Cancalosi, EdD.

Advocacy
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Updates

Joanne Doherty

The National Education Association has resources to help you understand ESSA and the available funding.

1. What is ESSA?
The Every Student Succeeds Act, also known as ESSA, is the new federal education law, signed by President Barack Obama in December 2015. For 14 long years, students and educators lived under the deeply flawed No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. ESSA returns decision-making to where it belongs: in the hands of local educators, parents, and communities.
Gone is No Child Left Behind's rigid system of focus on standardized testing and labeling public schools. This means there is more time for teaching and learning, and more flexibility for us to make choices that we know work for our students. Read more

2.  Do students and educators at your school have everything they need? This is your opportunity to speak up. Use the checklist to think through what your school needs.  Checklist

3. ESSA Conversation Starters  c ontain bullet point information that is intended to help educators communicate important aspects of ESSA and how this information impacts their classrooms and students. In addition to the bullet points there are links to in-depth information on the issue addressed.

Call to Action
If we do not get a seat at the table we will not get a piece of the funding for our programs and students. Ask your principal /supervisor about the funding for your Health and Physical Education program.
Find out who is representing the HPE Department on your district ' s ESSA Committee.

Thank you,
