Parent Newsletter

October 2017

From Mr. Hickerson

The fall season is upon us and we are just about to wrap up the first nine weeks of the school year. Maize South HS is off to a fantastic start both academically and in the area of athletics and activities. The nine weeks ends on Oct. 13, and we do not have school on Monday, Oct. 16 as our staff will be involved in professional development activities that day.

Congratulations goes out to MSHS senior Brodie Gullic for being named a National Merit Semi-finalist. Also, seniors Tim Dobson, Cale Thimmesch, and Hayden Schmidt were named as Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations fellas!

On Tuesday, Oct. 3rd our freshmen and sophomores took the ACT ASPIRE test. Our senior class took the ACT test. We allowed our junior class to take a college visit day on Oct. 3rd.

The Kansas Department of Education has released state assessment information for the spring of 2018. MSHS sophomores will be taking state assessments in English language arts and math, and our MSHS juniors will be testing in the areas of science and history/government and social studies.

On September 22, we hosted Buhler HS for homecoming. After the game we had our traditional homecoming dance that was well attended. That same night we opened our new locker room facility at the stadium after several months of construction. We are blessed to have some of the best facilities around.

Maize South HS has been classified by the Kansas State High School Activities Association as a Class 5A high school. Our enrollment this year is 870 students putting us in Class 5A for the 17-18 school year. For all sports except football this year we will remain in Division 2 of the AVCTL.

Thank you for supporting MSHS and being part of our school community. If you ever have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact a staff member or the building administrative team. You can follow the happenings at MSHS on www.usd266.com and www.avctl.org.

It's a great day to be a Maverick!

Dave Hickerson

Girls Golf

The girls golf team has been having a successful season. We have finished in first once, second twice and third once in tournaments with as many as 12 teams. We have had steady and consistent play from all of our team this year.

Volleyball

At present our records are as follows: Varsity 15-7, JV 12-3, and freshmen are 12-7.

Tennis

The Girls Tennis Season is winding down to just a couple weeks left.  There have been over 24 tournaments that have been played and the team has fared well in most of the tourneys.  JV and Varsity league is on Monday and our Regional is next Saturday.  Both will be held at Goddard High School.  Seniors Emma Queen, Courtney Sellens, Kennedy Miller, Madi Zorn and others have done a great job of leading the team in practice.  They plus Maddi Wilkinson and Kaylan Fields will be counted on as we head to postseason.

Science

Principals of Engineering (POE) and Introduction to Engineering Design have been working through the engineering process to learn how to solve various problems. POE has been working on simple machines and IED has been learning to design parts on Inventor.  Principals of Engineering also went over to the Early Childhood Center and worked with them to build Whirlybirds.

Just to review, our health science III class gives students an opportunity to explore careers in medicine firsthand. The program has three tiers; the first introduces students to health science, college, medical school, potential careers, medical terminology, etc. The second tier includes Certified Nursing Assistance, pharmacology, phlebotomy, EKG or anatomy and physiology class for college credit through WATC. The third tier or "capstone class" which involves shadowing a wide variety of medical professionals in a real-world setting. The students are MHS and MSHS seniors who have shown their seriousness and dedication by taking the aforementioned health science 1 and 2 classes. The class is highly competitive with a 20% acceptance rate.

We are always searching for ways to improve our shadowing experiences and new partnerships to forge. We are currently piloting a new hospital shadowing partner; a special thanks to Makenna Miller and Maddy Rondeau for pioneering this for us.
